The South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) launched its annual fall and winter air pollution prevention program, Check Before You Burn in November. The program is aimed at improving Southern California’s air quality by restricting wood burning in residential fireplaces on days when air pollution levels are high, which is from November through February.
New shopping center project in Los Al on the agenda

The Los Alamitos Planning Commission approved the project at its meeting last week. The developer, Lincoln Property Company, now has the greenlight to begin the project. The print edition stated the project still has to go through the hands of the city council, which is incorrect according to Steven Mendoza, Los Al’s Community Development Director, when asked to clarify on Nov 21.
Winter Wonderland returns in December

Keep the ‘Holiday Tradition’ with Los Al High’s Choir
“Holiday Tradition” will be presented Dec. 8 – 10 by the 400-plus member National Champion Los Alamitos Choral Department. The award-winning Los Al High Orchestra will be accompanying the choir in the epic finale featuring the “Hallelujah Chorus.” As always, the current choir group invites choir alumni to join in on the singing. This year, the group is especially welcoming local servicemen and women so that they may be recognized for their service to our country.
Youth Center receives grant from ABB Optical
ABB Optical Group, a leading distributor of optical products, recently announced that the Los Alamitos Youth Center will receive a $1,000 grant through the company’s third annual ABB Cares program, which recognizes and celebrates outstanding non-profit organizations throughout the country.
Care and Share food drive in Cypress
The Cypress Senior Center is holding a food drive through Nov. 30. As many as 335,000 Orange County residents are at risk of going hungry. The majority of people at risk each month are the working poor, children, seniors on fixed incomes, single parents, veterans, the disabled, the homeless, and individuals experiencing medical emergencies or recent job layoffs. This is a chance to make a real difference in the lives of families in Orange County who could go hungry without you.

How Veterans Day got its name and tales of local Vets
Over 57 million men and women have served, sacrificed, and fought in our country’s Military forces from 1775 through 2016.
In 1775, 241 years ago, our “War of Independence” began.
The Revolutionary War liberated our 13 original colonies from the British monarchy. The men and women who lived and died in the 13 colonies were known as patriots. The patriots fought with Gen. George Washington in the Revolutionary War and they became our country’s first Military Veterans.
Los Al native participates in college theatre production
Davis & Elkins College student Emmett Jaeger of Los Alamitos assisted in the Division of Fine and Performing Arts production of “The Giver,” presented at the Boiler House Theatre on the College campus, from October 20-23.
Jaeger is the son of Talbot and Dawn Jaeger of Los Alamitos. Jaeger served as stage manager and member of the lighting crew.
The production of “The Giver” depicts what it means to grow up, grow wise and take control of your own destiny.
Police arrest man suspected of robbing Ameci Pizza
A robbery occurred at Ameci Pizza and Pasta, located at 10847 Los Alamitos Blvd. on Nov. 3 at about 9 p.m. A suspect in possession of a firearm and wearing a scarf or rag over their face took an undisclosed amount of cash from the business.
Suspected car thief caught hiding in La Palma
A suspected car thief has been located hiding in a residential neighborhood of La Palma and is now in law enforcement custody.
Javier Anguiano, 30, escaped from officer custody while at La Palma Hospital on Nov. 6 at about 1:15 a.m.
Anguiano was originally arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle and dangerous drugs. He was being treated at the hospital for injuries from a traffic collision.
Anguiano was found later that day and was arrested for escape, possession of stolen vehicle, possession of dangerous drugs, and outstanding warrants.
Special Olympics team medals in first competition
The City of Los Alamitos has partnered with the Southern California Special Olympics to form a local Special Olympics tennis team – the Los Alamitos Wolves.
The team consists of athletes Carly Dodd (Westminster), Josh Manso (Long Beach), Kenneth Noguchi (Redondo Beach), Ryan Rodriguez (Seal Beach), and Albert Hong (Cypress). They are coached by Mike Brennan (Seal Beach), Gerrylyn De Guia (Norwalk), Calvin Kwan (Cypress), Teri Monroy (Los Alamitos),Gail Yaksitch (Long Beach), and Jose Manso (Long Beach).

Cypress’ Barton Place mixed-use project breaks ground
Province Group CEO Mark J. Kerslake recently announced the company held a groundbreaking ceremony on November 1 for the Barton Place mixed-use development located on the long vacant 33-acre property at 4921 Katella Avenue in Cypress. Mayor Yarc, Mayor Pro-Tem Morales, Council Member Berry, and Council Member Johnson were on-site to celebrate the groundbreaking for the project, which was unanimously approved by the Cypress City Council last year.

The City of Cypress recently announced the launch of its brand new website, www.cypressca.org.
Youth Center’s music program is a hit
Families from Cypress appreciate top-rated Youth Center After School and Music Programs in Los Alamitos, where kids from within or outside the city can still sign up for both low-cost programs. Currently, there are a total of 230 kids in the after school program, and 220 enrolled in the music program, coming from all area cities.
American Legion honors students in the area
Five young students that attended Girls State were recently honored by the ladies of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 716 for their participation in the program. Going to Girls State is a once a year function and it is a privilege being chosen. The students spend a week learning about government, but besides that they meet girls from all over California.
