New recycling law to affect Cypress businesses

The city of Cypress wants to remind the community that California state law requires most businesses to recycle commodities to prevent unnecessary tons of material going to landfills.  Last year, the legislature passed AB341 (Chesbro) relating to Mandatory Commercial Recycling, which applies to every commercial facility that generates more than four cubic yards of trash a week. A standard commercial bin, or “dumpster,” is 3 cubic yards; therefore, the state requires businesses with one or more of these bins – serviced more than once a week – to recycle.

The legislation applies to multi-family residential dwellings of five units or more.

Consolidated Disposal Service (CDS) is the hauler responsible for assisting and helping Cypress comply with the new state law. To begin recycling, contact the hauler’s customer service department at 800-347-4000.

Sign up and take advantage of an Orange County grant obtained by Cypress. It will pay for one year of recycling at commercial facilities through the Regional Commercial Recycling Pilot program. This opportunity is available on a first-come basis.

The goal of the program is to increase recyclable materials diversion in the business sector from 2-5 percent in Cypress and Seal Beach. Eligible parties will receive a site inspection of their property to ensure that it is suitable for the program.

For more information regarding this program or to schedule a site visit, contact Consolidated Waste Disposal at 562-259-2826, or email shall4@republicservices.com.

“Our league is going to be very challenging,” Martinez said.
