During the December 10, 2012 Cypress City Council meeting, the City Council unanimously selected Dr. Prakash Narain to serve as the city’s Mayor, and Leroy Mills to serve as the Mayor Pro Tem for 2013.

The Angels have acquired left-handed pitcher Jason Vargas from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for infielder Kendrys Morales. The transaction was announced by General Manager Jerry Dipoto.

Blue Striker wins tournament
The Blue Striker AYSO Region 154 team recently took first place for Cypress Region 154, losing only one game by a single goal. In all, the team finished with a 10-1 record. The team consists of players from Cypress, Anaheim, and Buena Park.

Local teams battle in Douglas Uselton Tourney
A handful of local team participated in the ninth annual Oxford Academy Tournament, which unfolded at Oxford Academy last week, ending on Saturday, Dec. 15.
The tournament was actually renamed the Douglas Uselton Memorial Tournament, re-named after the Buena Park resident and former Patriots captain who died in a drunk driving automobile accident while driving to a school event with his father two years ago.
Nakamura, Kern take oaths of office
The November elections filled two seats on the Cypress School District Board of Trustees.
Those seats were won by Brian Nakamura and Candice Kern. Both board members had been appointed previously to fill seats on the board – seats left vacant when a board member Donna Erickson retired.
Nakamura is a long time resident of the city of La Palma, and Kern is a long time resident of the city of Cypress. Both have been active in the Cypress School District community for many years.
Superintendent Beverly Hempstead administered the Oath of Office to the newly elected Board members at the Organizational Meeting held on Dec. 12.
Board meetings are held the second Thursday of each month in the District Board room at 9470 Moody St. in Cypress. Agendas and minutes can be found posted on the Cypress School Diistrict’s website at www.cypsd.k12.ca.us.
LAHS student scores perfect on AP exam
Christopher Yeh of Los Alamitos High School earned a perfect score on his AP exam in spring 2012. Advanced Placement Exams are based on a composite score of 1 to 5, where a 5 is equivalent to a grade of A in the corresponding college course.
