Cypress kicks off this year’s Relay for Life

Cypress Mayor Dr. Prakash Narain and Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva helped Event Coordinator and Chair Nicki Butler kickoff the 2013 Cypress Relay for Life Event held at Grace Christian School on Saturday, Sept. 28.  After the opening ceremony, cancer survivors walked a “victory lap” once around the course.

Relay for Life is a life-changing event that help communities celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease.  Members of relay teams camped overnight and each relay team worked to have a member on the relay course for the entire event.  Relay for Life events are held nationwide and in 23 countries around the world.  Every dollar raised today benefits the American Cancer Society and its efforts to save lives.

“Let us celebrate and honor today, the heroes and heroines in our lives who took cancer head on and won the battle,” said Mayor Narain.  “Let us also keep those we’ve lost to cancer in our memories and hearts.  With our collective will and resolve, one day cancer will be a thing of the past.  Until that day comes, we must remain vigilant in prevention by maintaining a healthy diet, exercise, rest, and keeping informed of advances in the war against cancer,” he added.
