Innocent victims died that day, and El Cajon Police officer Jarred Slocum was injured when the suspect opened fire on him, striking Slocum in the head.

Cypress Community Festival attendees enjoyed checking out the numerous classic cars and vehicles that made up the 17th Annual Car Show. Close to 100 vehicles were featured. The Best of Show award was won by Carl Laski, owner of a 1917 Model T Fire Truck. And the Sponsor’s Choice award was given to Pat Sulferino, owner of a 1966 Ford Mustang Coupe.

“In Lakeside, we’re a baseball and football school, along with being an agricultural schools,”said long-time El Capitan high water polo coach Robin Sanchez. “It’s been that way for as long as I can remember, so we always have to fight the fight for athletes. But we always get great kids.”

Grossmont College breaks a record

Grossmont College is a world-record holder, too.
Entering its second half-century serving the education needs of the greater East County region, Grossmont College exited its first 50 years with a year-long celebration during the 2011-12 school year, capped by an open house celebration back on April 14.

During the festivities, students, faculty and staff, and the public were invited to sign a “birthday” card for the school — a massive, 4-foot structure, which eventually gained more than 1,800 signatures from well wishers.
