Cypress HS inspires wishes to come true

The dodge ball tournament at Cypress High on April 11, benefited the Make A Wish Foundation chapter at the school.

Cypress High School is the magnet of this city in many ways. The art of philanthropy is one reason why the school is a beacon in the community. Friday, April, 11, the school was point zero to generate money to make a child’s wish come true.

The Make A Wish Foundation does that every day. Dania Al-Itani, president of the Make A Wish chapter at Cypress High School, and the rest of the student body, raising more than $5,000 to some child’s dream come true.

Cypress hosts Rose Parade gala

0
The Cypress Marching Band goes through a rehearsal.

Cypress High School Marching Band Director James Quirion had tried several times to his Imperial Brigade into the annual New Year’s Day festive celebration better known as the Rose Parade. He and his band had no luck going through the regular route.

In order to get the prestigious event Quirion and the Cypress High band would have to do it the hard way. Well, the best way they know how: they competed. And they did their way. Quirion took his band to the 2013 Los Angeles County Fair Marching Band Competition where they went up against more than 40 other schools.

The Centurions wound up winning the top prize of $5,000 and earned a slot to the 2015 Rose Parade.

“We fought for it,” Quirion said. “The kids were so excited, they were so proud. It’s wonderful for the kids. It’s our coming out party.”

After the joy comes the challenge. The challenge now for Quirion and Cypress is to come up with about $100,000 so they can be ready to perform on New Year’s Day. To replace the antiquated drum equipment alone will cost roughly $18,000, said Quirion.

Out biggest challenge is our instruments,” Quirion said. “It’s old.”

To help make up for the costs for updated uniforms, new equipment and road travel, Quirion, the Cypress band and the school will be hosting a fundraiser on Tuesday, April 22. This day will be more than a effort to raise money; it will also be an introduction of sorts for the Cypress community to meet and greet representatives from the Tournament of Roses.

Tuesday will be a big day for Cypress High School. It will also mark a special occasion for the Cypress marching band as the president from the Tournament of Roses makes an official visit to the school.

Tournament of Roses President Richard L. Chinen will make his appearance to formally congratulate the Cypress High marching band for being accepted to play in the 2015 Rose Parade. This is expected to be an all-day affair as the school will be welcoming Chinen with a full-blown activity session in the Cypress gym in the morning with balloons, confetti and the works.

Later that evening, Chinen, school officials, sponsors and other dignitaries will make their way to the Eagles Nest Clubhouse at the Navy Golf Course. The event, which costs $75 per ticket, is a kickoff gala fundraiser for the school and the band.

Tustin tops Cypress

The Cypress High baseball suffered its first loss in Empire League play. The reason: errors.
Indeed, Cypress committed six errors against Tustin, which had previously not won a single league contest, and as a result, suffered a 12-3 beating to split the two-game series on April 11 at home, of all places.

Cypress won the first meeting, which unfolded at Tustin, with an 8-3 tallyon April 8. The Centurions (9-6, 3-1) dropped to the No. 3 spot in the standings. They now trail frontrunner Valencia (8-1) and second-place Pacifica (5-1). The Centurions trailed for the entire contest, falling behind1-0 in the first and then into a 5-1 hole in the second.

In fact, Tustin held a 7-1lead when Cypress dented the board for a pair of runs in the fifth. The Centurions actually finished with the same amount of hits as the opposition, swatting nine, with Brandon Alamo going 2-for-3 and Dominic Fletcher, who had a 3-for-3 day, knocking in all three RBI with a pair of doubles.

Cypress starter Joe Mercado suffered the loss. He tossed three innings, allowing five earned runs off five hits while striking out four and walking six. Mike Murphy relieved him, allowing four earned runs while giving up a hit and fanning three hitters.

Cypress returned to action against West, which it defeated by the score of8-1 in the Redondo Tournament on Saturday, April 12. It then faced JSerra Catholic in a doubleheader on April 16 (score not available) and will battle Bishop Amat in the Redondo Tournament on Saturday, April 19. That contest starts at 11 a.m.

Centurions keep winning

The Cypress High baseball team recently wrapped the Boras Tournament, which didn’t prove to be easy competition for the defending CIF champ. Though the squad finished with an unimpressive record at the Mater Dei tourney, it recovered to remain unbeaten in Empire League action, topping Tustin with an 8-3 victory on Tuesday, April 8 at home.

The Centurions, who occupy the No. 1 spot in the standings, improved to

Centurions pitcher James Acuna (3-0) earned the win by tossing four innings. He allowed three runs off seven hits while striking out three and walking one. Josh Gogue worked the last two innings, allowing no runs while fanning a batter and allowing a single hit. Jason Bush threw one inning, too.

The Centurions, who trailed 1-0 after an inning, struck back for five runs in the second. Though Tustin dented the board for a pair, trimming the deficit to 5-3 in the fourth, the Centurions added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth and another in the sixth.

At the plate Dominic Fletcher flexed his muscles. He ended with a 3-for-4 performance, which included a home run and doiuble. He also scored twice and chalked up two RBI.

Brandon Alamo and Garrett Brockel both went 2-for-3. Alamo knocked in one RBI while Brockel plated a pair of runs, scored another and smacked a double. Additionally, Bush hit an RBI double and Mikhail Izraylev doubled as well. Isaiah Parra also recorded a h it.

The Centurions will wrap the two-game series at Tustin on April 10 at 3 p.m.

Last week, Cypress ended the Boras Tournament. It finished that run with a 1-3 record, suffering defeats at the hand of Temecula Valley, Great Oak and Granite Hills. The team’s only win came against  Grossmont, which it bested with a 7-1 win on April 2.

Acuna earned the win, tossing six innings while allowing six hits. He also recorded five strikeouts and walked a batter while allowing an earned run.

The Centurion, who notched one run in the first and two in the second before taking a 4-0 lead in the third, impressed at the dish.

Parra swang the big stick, going 2-for-3 with a home run and a pair of RBI. He also scored a run. Alamo and Brockel recorded the only other multiple-hit games. Alamo, who played with his brother Tyler on last year’s championship team, went 2-for-3 with a double and RBI. Brockel finished with a double and run.

A handful of others delivered one hit. That list included Bush, Elijah Skipps (1-5), Izraylev and Nick Valdez. All of them but Bush earned an RBI.

The matchup occurred in the consolation bracket, considering both teams lost their openers.
