La Palma Mayor Steve Shanahan praised the city’s accomplishments over the past year and noted the challenges the city faces in the future, during the annual State of the City Address on April 3, at the California Joint Powers Insurance Authority.
Youth Center kicks off campaign
More than 100 people gathered for the Youth Center’s 17th Annual Community Support Campaign kick off in Los Alamitos on April 1.
Empire League teams battle on the track
The athletic area at Kennedy High was filled with sports fans on March 27. Some showed up to watch the prep baseball games while others lined the football field in La Palma, where a battle unfolded on the track and infield.
Indeed, the Kennedy High track program hosted Western High for an Empire League duel meet, with one school triumphing in the female competition while the other won in boys’ action.
Indeed, the Irish ladies captured the event with an impressive 68-59 victory and the Pioneers males won by the lopsided score of 78-48.
In other action during the weekend, several athletes from Servite delivered solid efforts at the Beach Cities Invitational, which unfolded at Marina High in Huntington Beach on March 30.
Servite’s Noah Moreno finished in 15th place in the 1600 meter run and teammate Mikeal Romanenko settled for 20th place. Nick Lipoccola finished in second place in the 100 meter (11.06) and fifth in the 200 (22.51). He finished one spot in front of teammate Tate Beachley.
Two of Class 147’s finest joins Cypress PD
Golden West College Police Academy graduated Class 147 on Friday, March 21, 2104. Among the graduates were two of the newest members of the Cypress Police Department – Officer Terry Mermer and Officer Daniel Shin, who was also Class 147 President.
Teams get their cheer on at nationals
The 2014 USA (United Spirit Association) High School Spirit Nationals competition brought out as many as 300 schools down to the Anaheim Convention Center for three days. The national competition, which took place March 28-30, featured an array of cheer, flag and drill competition.
Local schools such as Cypress High School, Los Alamitos High, Mater Dei, Long Beach Poly, Cerritos and Orange Lutheran took part in the contest.
The schools were being judged in categories as song/pom and prep flag, dance team and drill team, super dancer, cheerleading intermediate and advanced. This was more than just competition for the varsity squads as junior varsity cheer and dance teams competed as well.
The first day of the competition drew a packed house as teams watched one another do their thing at the center floor with their individual performances. Long Beach Poly ran into the misfortune of their music, which every school plays during their respective performance, of being cut off. Nonetheless, the Jackrabbits kept on with their performance with the background of loud applause and cheer from the audience.
Both the Cypress and Los Alamitos teams were recognized for the performances as well.
Businesses join students at mentoring breakfast

One hundred people were invited to come to Cypress Senior Center on Saturday, March 15, to celebrate the 77th birthday of La Palma resident, Louise Tiznado, hosted by her husband, Claudio Tiznado and their daughter, Claudina Tiznado.

Bates is awarded national honor
Former Los Alamitos City Councilman Ronald Bates was recently honored in Washington D.C. as one of three recipients of the 2014 National Public Service Awards, from the American Society for Public Administration.

The Los Alamitos High track team hosted Laguna Hills at a duel track meet on Wednesday, March 19 at the John Barnes Sports Complex, where a full crowd of parents, teachers, and spectators watched featured races.
March birthdays are green day
On Monday, March 19, the lunch program at the Cypress Senior Center celebrated seniors whose birthday was in March with cupcakes provided by Vernon Atwood with Right at Home In Home Care and Assistance. Many participants celebrated their special day.

UNANIMOUS Girls U12 Region 154 Cypress team is off to a good start with 2-0 record, while also celebrating AYSO 1964-2014 50th Anniversary. Coach Ed Ebel and family have known owner Jason Ybarra over 25 years. “When young athletes see the value of friendship and sponsors working hand and hand they see the big picture on why it’s so important to value owners of companies whom participate in supporting sports, it’s a Goal Win for everyone,” said Coach Ebel. The team is pictured in the UNANIMOUS company truck on opening day.
