Karim El Mabchour and Yonas Mebrahtu paced the field from wire to wire, with El Mabchour edging out Mebrahtu by three seconds to win the Cypress 10K run through the streets of Cypress on July 23. El Mabchour, 34, of Albuquerque finished the course in a time of 30 minutes, 56 seconds, with Mebrahtu, 28, finishing in 30:59.

Juan Paredes, 26, of Los Angeles, was with the top two runners through the first half of the race, but faded in the second lap. He held on for third place in a time of 31:28. Belainesh Gebre, 28, was the top female in a time of 34:16 and was eighth overall. Wendy Lopez of Cypress was 15th overall with a time of 36:23. The 44-year old won the female 40-44 division.
In the 5K event, Leif Hellgren, 17, of Newport Beach was the overall winner with a time of 16:36, while Sean McConville, 17 of Irvine was second with a time of 16:43. Sylvia Mosqueda, 50, of Las Vegas was the top female finisher with a time of 18:05 for 18th overall. The 5K event had nearly 1,000 entries. Los Al/Seal Beach
Johannes Bernbeck, 54, of Seal Beach was the 58th overall finisher in the 10K event with a time of 45:26. Bernbeck was the second place runner in the male 50-54 division. Two Los Alamitos runners finished in the top 100. Dennis Lindsey, 41, ran a time of 48:16, while Hiroko Barringer, 48, completed the course in 49:53. Lindsey finished sixth in the male 40-44 division and Barringer was third in the female 45-49 division.
Eleven-year-old Bronson Tsarofski, of Seal Beach ran the course in 54:12 and was the second-place runner in the male 11-14 division. Josh Lofthouse, 28, of Los Alamitos ran the course in 55:50 and Mark Phair, 56, of Seal Beach ran a time of 56:35. Thirteen-year-old Alexander Born of Los Alamitos ran a time of 58:29 and was the third runner in the male 11-14 division.
Elise Reysbergen, 22, of Los Alamitos ran a time of 58:55 to take seventh in the female 19-24 division. Stephanie Born, 42, of Los Alamitos ran a time of 59:3, while Maria Lindsey, 40, also of Los Al, ran a time of 1:00:17. They were sixth and seventh in their division, respectively.
Seal Beach’s Heather Tsarofski, 49, (1:00:24) and Los Alamitos’ Cynthia Reysbergen, 54, (1:01:06) both clocked times that put them in the top seven in their respective divisions.
In the 5K event, Seal Beach resident Lorenzo Tyner was the seventh overall finisher with a time of 17:33. Tyner, 51, was the top finisher in the male 50-54 division. Los Al resident Masa Kinoshita, 28, also won his division with a time of 17:51. Kinoshita was the 13th overall finisher.
Dave Depew, 55, of Los Alamitos ran the course in a time of 18:42. He took second place in the male 55-59 division and was 28th overall. Joshua Hogate, 30, of Los Alamitos was the 53rd overall finisher in a time of 20:05. He was third in the male 30-34 division.
Seal Beach resident Christopher Johnson was fourth in the male 40-44 division. Johnson, 44, ran the course in a time of 23:05. Jeff Magallanes, 46, and Jeff Baker, 49, both of Los Alamitos each finished in the top 10 of their division. Magallanes ran the course in 23:34 and Baker finished in 24:25. Adam Tan, 14, of Los Alamitos finished the race in 24:31. Sebastian Lim, 10, of Seal Beach ran a time of 25:38 and was third in the male 10 and under division.
Other notable locals included Christopher Tan, 43, of Los Alamitos (25:56), Alexander Gednov, 24, of Los Alamitos (26:27) and Jeanne Torres, 52, of Seal Beach (26:50). All three were top 10 in their division, with Torres take second in the female 50-54 division.
Cypress
Nicholas Rosales, 15, of Cypress was 40th overall in a time of 41:18 and was third in the male 15-18 division. Travis Ramsdell, 17, of Cypress was 43rd overall with a time of 42:18 and was fourth in the division. Corey Kuramoto was 51st overall in 43:38 and was fifth in the male 15-18 division.
Several other Cypress residents were among the top 100 overall finishers as well. Rick Tkach finished in 48:50 and was fourth in the male 50-54 division. Philip Schneider finished in 49:00 and took third in the male 60-64 division. Duane Murata finished in 49:20 and 67-year-old Ron Maurstad finished in 50:03 and was second in the male 65-69 division.
Also in the top 100 overall were Eric Pangelinan (50:23), Derek Malloy (51:05) and Adib El Moutaani (51:40). Several Cypress residents had times well under an hour in the 6.2 mile race, including Alan Hofilena, 52, ( 52:35), Bernard Chen, 44, (53:02), Reggie Santos, 55, (56:18), Jason Opena, 25, (57:31), John Hunter, 59, (57:35) and Jane Allison, 51, (57:36). Allison was second in the female 50-54 division.
Also clocking under and hour were, Vince Anderson, 25, (58:23), Briana Greeley, 13, (58:48), Beth Williams, 45, (59:37) and Daniel Cho, 17, (59:41). Greeley was first in the female 11-14 division.
In the 5K event, Cypress resident Anselmo Feliciano,55, was ninth overall with a time of 17:39 and took first in the male 55-59 division. Nick Troutman, 24, finished in 19:26 and was third in the male 19-24 division. Cypress resident Robert Heins, 19, finished in 19:47 and was fifth in the male 19-24 division.
Gavin LaBeet, 26 finished in 20:06 and was third in the male 25-29 division. Nathan Butler and Junhyun Kim, both 16 finished in 20:24 and 20:57, respectively. Benjamin Grimes, 15, finished in 20:59 and Bladen Crosby, 14, finished in 21:03 and was fifth in the male 11-14 division. Jack Raymond, 16 finished in 21:13, while Jim Olson, 48, finished in 21:15 and took fourth in the male 45-49 division.
Anaheim/Buena Park
Daniel Cantu of Anaheim was the 22nd overall finisher in the 10K event. Cantu, 29, finished in 37:07 and took seventh in the male 25-29 division. Anaheim’s Adam Dominguez, 33, was 36th overall with a time of 39:29, while Damon Gohata, 34, of Buena Park was 42nd overall in 41:55 and took fifth in the male 30-34 division. Younghoon Yu, 34, of Buena Park finished in 46:41 and took eighth in the male 30-34 division, while Matthew Meyers, 24, of Buena Park was sixth in the male 19-24 division with a time of 46:55. Andrew McMillen, 22, of Anaheim was seventh in the same division with a time of 48:15. Robert Meyers, 26, of Buena Park finished in a time of 48:30 and was ninth in the male 25-29 division. Also notable were Benjamin Bernard, 23, of Anaheim (50:50), Lorenzo Herrera, 49, of Buena Park (54:56) and James Hucko, 52, of Buena Park (58:48). Bernard and Herrera were both eighth in their respective divisions.
Also notable was Daniel Henderson III , 74, of Anaheim, who ran the course in 1:01:11. Henderson was the top runner in the male 70-74 division.
In the 5K event, Paul Yoo, 16, of Anaheim, was 10th overall with a time of 17:46 and took fifth in the male 15-18 division. Another Anaheim resident, Kristen Reyes, 41, was the 37th overall finisher in a time of 19:25 and was the sixth overall female runner. She was the top runner in the female 40-44 division.
Steve Prideaus, 60, was another Anaheim resident who had a strong performance. Prideaux finished in a time of 20:42 and was the second place runner in the male 60-64 division. Rosalinda Alcala, 47, ran a time of 21:53. The Anaheim resident was the fourth place finisher in the female 45-49 division.
Several Anaheim teens also clocked solid times. Marko Lemus, 15, (22:01), Lisanne Burns, 16, (24:11), Michelle Gonzalez, 15, (24:11) and Kapreece Venzor-Aguirre, 13, (25:39) all turned in solid runs. Venzor-Aguirre was the sixth place runner in the female 11-14 division.
Brenda Spielman, 29, ran a time of 26:37. She finished fourth in the female 25-29 division. Anne-Marie Bulone ran a time of 27:02. She was third in the female 19-24 division. Leslie Sanchez, 15, of Anaheim ran a time of 27:24.
Twenty-four year old Sergio Hernandez of Buena Park ran a time of 19:45 and was the fourth place runner in the male 19-24 division. Another Buena Park resident, Stephen Jamison, 35, ran a time of 20:07 to take seventh in the male 35-39 division. And Sanjay Varghese, 16, ran a solid time of 26:10.
Garden Grove/Westminster
Roderick Powell, 60, of Garden Grove was the 52nd overall finisher in the 10K with a time of 43:39. Powell was the top finisher in the male 60-64 division. Donald Hambly, 60, also of Garden Grove, was the 86th overall finisher in a time of 49:38 and was the fourth finisher in the male 60-64 division. Garden Grove resident Brandon Herrik, 14, ran a time of 54:07 to take the top spot in the male 11-14 division.
Other notable Garden Grove residents included Christopher Camden, 46, (57:10), Ernest Chavez, 58, (58:23) and David Kubicek, 56, ( 59:13).
In the 5K event, Kurt Whittington, 38, of Garden Grove was the 27th overall finisher in a time of 18:36. He was the third finisher in the male 35-39 division. Merce Sastre, 47, of Garden Grove ran a time of 19:37. Sastre was the 40th overall finisher and the second runner in the female 45-49 division.
Garden Grove residents Gary Starke, 54, and Albert Yi, 37, ran times of 23:15 and 25:26, respectively. Each was the 11th place runners in their age divisions.
Ignacio Delgado, 28, of Westminster, ran a time of 22:11 and was the eighth place runner in the male 25-29 division. Gerardo Holguin, 34, of Westminster, ran a time of 27:40 and was the 10th runner in the male 30-34 division.
