LAMC celebrates expansion

Los Alamitos Medical Center and Pacific Medial Buildings hosted a grand opening celebration recently, to recognize the new medical building and parking structure that is now open on the hospital’s campus.

The structure and building has been in the works since planning began in 2007. City officials, from Los Alamitos were on hand to recognize the hospital and its expansion to serve more patients. City Councilman Troy Edgar spoke on behalf of the city, as he was mayor during the initial stages of the project.

“Today is a very exciting day for us here in the city,” Edgar said.

The new structure adds more than 1,000 parking spaces on six levels, with two elevators and a maximum of $5 for a day of parking, with day passes available for return access. The parking garage is a key component for future expansion, PMB President Mark Toothacre said. Toothacre said the new office building is the most energy efficient medical building in Orange County. It’s constuction was Leadership in Energy and Efficient Design (LEED) certified. He praised the efforts of the many people it took to get the project to fruition.

“It’s truly gratifying,” Toothacre said.

LAMC Chief Executive Officer, Ken Clayton, spoke on behalf of the hospital, noting that the plans allowed for the expansion, without taking up any additional land, but simply a reconfiguring of the current campus. He recognized that there were some community concerns, but said the project managers tried to address all their concerns. Clayton also recognized all the people involved in the project, including city staffers who worked diligently to get the project approved and built.

“It takes vision, collaberation, teamwork and the commitment of a lot of people,” Clayton said.

The medical building is open, though many of the offices are still under final construction. An urgent care facility is scheduled to open on the ground floor, with access from the front of the building, in early 2015.

Access to the structure is available off Katella Avenue, for vehicles traveling west on Katella. For those traveling east on Katella, the structure can be accessed by turning left on Kaylor Street.
