More than 350 LDS youth danced and partied beside the Eiffel Tower during the 7th annual Mormon Formal, commonly known as the “Mormal,” in the spectacularly decorated lobby of the Cerritos Performing Arts Center.

The party, entitled “An Evening in Paris” was held on Friday, March 16. Youth at the event gathered from Long Beach, Seal Beach, Los Alamitos, Signal Hill, Lakewood, Cerritos, Whittier, Garden Grove, Cypress and Huntington Beach.

“Shop ‘til you drop” at the annual Cypress Church Rummage Sale on Saturday, March 31, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Find toys, books, clothing, sports gear, furniture and maybe that “special treasure” you have been looking for. “Each year we have a wide selection of great bargains available. There should be something for just about everyone!” stated church member Bob Koehler.

The Los Alamitos High baseball team opened the season at 3-0, after an 8-3 win over Villa Park in a Loara Tournament game on Saturday at Los Alamitos High.

The Griffins got 4 1/3 solid innings from sophomore pitcher Jacob Nix, as the Griffins took a 6-0 lead after four innings. A two-out rally for four runs in the bottom of the fourth put the Griffins in solid control.

Los Alamitos Medical Center officially celebrated the opening of its new Wound Healing and Hyperbarics center on Feb. 29, with a ribbon cutting and public open house event.

The center began operations in November and now gives the medical center a tool for aggressive treatment in the healing of wounds. The hyperbaric chambers treat patients by putting them in a pressurized oxygen-rich environment that forces extra oxygen to wounds and speeds healing.

“This delivers super oxygen to the tissues,” Dr. Ronald Holness said.

The Cypress Senior Center lunch participants enjoyed a nice surprise with an Ice Cream Social from Jayson Fields with Care More. Over 60 lunch seniors were treated with vanilla ice cream, fudge and whipped cream. The next ice cream social will be on Game Day Friday, March 30. All lunch participants are able to be a part of the ice cream social.

Adults 60 years and older are requested to make a suggested donation of $2.50 for lunch. If you are under 60 years of age there is a charge of $3.50 per meal.

The Cypress Sunshine Club honored its 80-89 year 'youngs' at its recent 30th Anniversary party held on February 18, at the Eagle's Nest Restaurant. The club also honored seven 90+ members with individual pictures. They were put in frames and handed out at the last Sunshine Club meeting on Thursday, February 23. Several of these members had been in the original Sunshine Club meeting 30 years ago.

St. Irenaeus Health Ministry has scheduled two Labyrinth Walks for Sunday, March 11 and Sunday, April 22, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Parish Hall of St. Irenaeus Church located at 5201 Evergreen Avenue in Cypress.

Early Christians made vows to make a pilgrimage to Jerusalem at some time during their lifetime. However, since that was not possible for everyone, the spiritual and physical journey of walking the labyrinth within designated cathedrals was seen by the Catholic Church as an acceptable substitute for an actual pilgrimage to the Holy City itself.

What does it take to be a father? Ed Tandy McGlasson will offer some insight into that agonizingly simple yet complex question at Cypress Church on Saturday, March 10. A former NFL player, speaker, encourager, author and pastor, McGlasson is a big man with a very big heart.

Fridays are always fun days at the Boys & Girls Club of Cypress, but on the Fridays that Unite Clothing comes, they are something extra special. On Friday, February 17th, Unite Clothing provided an exciting day of activities for all Club members to enjoy. Club members did face painting, made paper bag puppets, played cops and robbers, searched for items in a scavenger hunt, and danced to music thanks to a live DJ.

Rossmoor resident Joy Knepper was crowned Miss Seal Beach on March 3, at the Miss Seal Beach Pageant at McGaugh Elementary School. Krista Tamares of Cypress was named Jr. Miss Seal Beach.

Knepper will be attending Azusa Pacific University in the Fall and majoring in communications, with an emphasis in hospitality.

“I plan on starting my own event coordinating business to plan weddings and other types of celebrations,” Knepper said.

Over 150 visitors, friends and members attended the open house at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Saturday evening, March 10. 

The key to celebrating more birthdays is to stay well.
