Cypress Art League President Pat Edep, along with her team of Bob Meyer and Steve Coler, completed an art project for the city of La Palma Recreation and Community Services Department.

All-Star Team on to State
The Los Alamitos 10U Red All Star softball team took second place in the Central B Districts Tournament held June 22-24 in Fountain Valley. 17th Annual Cypress Car Show plays on heart strings of car lovers
Car lovers will swoon over the 17th Annual Cypress Car Show, a big part of this year’s Cypress Community Festival on Saturday, July 28.
Visitors will be able to walk right up to a wide variety of dreams-on-wheels such as street cars from eras gone by, muscle cars, Corvettes, classics, trucks, vintage vehicles and sports cars.
Owners are on site and usually available to answer questions.
Naval Weapons Station changes leadership
Captain Terry Auberry took his ceremonial final piping ashore on Friday as he retired after 38 years of service in the U.S. Navy. Auberry’s final command was the Naval Weapons Station, Seal Beach and the Navy Munitions Command, CONUS West Division.
Auberry, who had led NWSSB since 2009, was relieved of his command in a simultaneous retirement and Change of Command ceremony at the NWSSB. Captain Martin Hardy III assumed command after Auberry spoke to the large group of guests, dignitaries, and his crew.
Network of support for mothers
The Precious Life Shelter Thrift and Gift Store in Los Alamitos is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a special promotional sale every 20th day of the month. All Thrift and Gift Store proceeds go to their three-phase residential programs for homeless, pregnant women.
Heartfelt Goodbye
Gretchen Shegina addressed the 5th grade students and parents that the 5th grade promotion ceremony at Rossmoor Elementary School last week. More than a few parents in the audience were former pupils of Ms. Shegina. It was a heartfelt goodbye as she announced that after teaching her entire career of 48 years in the Los Alamitos School district, this would be her final year and she is retiring from teaching. Shegina is comforted by Rossmoor Principal Kiva Spiratos.
Weaver Principal receives National honor
Weaver Elementary School Principal Erin Kominsky has joined an elite group of her peers in being recognized as a National Distinguished Principal for 2011-12. The National Distinguished Principals program honors outstanding elementary and middle-level administrators who ensure America’s children acquire a sound foundation for lifelong learning and achievement.
Rossmoor Cadillac Man
Pride, perfection and passion are what make a vintage car restoration for Rossmoor resident Jerry Cochran and his 1958 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham.
With the only one of 4 red models in existence, out of 704 cars totally ever produced, Cochran will be showing the American classic for the first time at the Concours d’ Elegance Car Show in Dana Point this Saturday.
Wolfpack roller hockey team a howling success
SANTEE — At one time, East County was a hotbed for high school roller hockey.
Teams representing Valhalla and Monte Vista, in fact, played in San Diego County High School Roller Hockey Conference’s inaugural championship game in 1996.
With three consecutive championship titles (1997-99), Monte Vista was the conference’s first dynasty.
But waning popularity and economics have caused the closure of area rinks over the years and reduced the playing field to one team at present: the West Hills High School Wolf Pack.
