Los Alamitos Unified School District recently announced that Ondrea Reed has been selected as the new Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services. She assumed her new role on July 6.
“The students, teachers, staff, and parents are what make it possible to ignite unlimited possibilities within our schools, and I look forward to working collaboratively with the communities of Los Alamitos, Seal Beach, and Rossmoor to meet and exceed the needs of all students,” said Reed.

Patriotic dog pays a visit to local club
The American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 716, of Los Alamitos had a special presentation recently from Tom Tackett and Milan Franklin of the Patriotic Service Dog Foundation.
The Patriotic Service Dog Foundation is a non-profit organization focused on serving our veterans by raising awareness for their needs and providing Service Dogs to those who may benefit from long-term mental and physical assistance.
Los Al All Stars qualify for Regional Finals
Los Al’s 8u softball All Star team won three straight games over the weekend to secure a spot in the Regional Finals which was held in San Diego from July 15-17. Los Alamitos was one of just 27 teams in the state to participate in the 8u division. Games began as early as 8 am on Friday and there was an athletes parade at Qualcomm Stadium on Friday night at 6:30 pm, complete with fireworks, special speakers & entertainment. Local ingredients, Eastern Mediterranean feel
A new restaurant fueled with passion for the flavors of the Eastern Mediterranean region is now in the Los Alamitos/Seal Beach neighborhood.
Yalla Mediterranean brings together the best flavors of Greece, Turkey, Morocco, Lebanon, Israel, and Syria among other countries from the region, and serves them in a healthy, delicious fashion.
“A group of us with passion for flavors of that part of the world got this started,” said Dave Wolfgram, who’s President and CEO of Yalla Mediterranean.
LAEF’s summer programs serve over 1,000 kids
The Summer Enrichment Institute ended on Friday, July 22, but everything students have learned and experienced will last a lifetime.
The Los Alamitos Education Foundation (LAEF) has provided 94 classes this summer to students in grades K-12. Over 600 students took one or more SEI classes and learned more about reading, writing, math, theater, art, science, technology, physical fitness and much more.
Art, Appetizers, and Wine take over St. Isidore Plaza
The fifth Annual Art, Appetizer and Wine Pairing fundraiser was held Sunday, June 12 at St. Isidore Historical Plaza.
Four featured Artists, which were Robin Feely, Dorte Christjansen, Maureen Vastardism, and Katie Neipris, donated a work of Art which was paired with an appetizer.
This year’s event featured GANSO Island Grill, Coconut Rabbit, Huff’s and a couple who bought a Fermenting Pot last year and created petite Reuben’s with home made sauerkraut.
Long Beach Rotary inducts new president
The Rotary Club of Long Beach inaugurated its hundredth new president last week, leading up to the club’s celebration of their centennial year in January 2017. Jayne Lastusky intends to spend her presidency continuing the club’s community service initiatives including local scholarships and service programs. Lastusky, a former region vice president of the American Cancer Society, was one of the first four women to join Long Beach Rotary in 1987 when the club became open to both genders.
Youth Center Leadership Academy graduates
With bright futures ahead of them, graduates of the fourth annual Leadership Academy celebrated their accomplishments on June 30 at the Youth Center in Los Alamitos. The top rated non-profit awarded certificates of completion after a week of intensive workshops designed to give a real world education of adult life beyond high school.
Student safety gets a boost from LAEF
The Los Alamitos Education Foundation (LAEF) Board of Directors approved an $11,500 donation to Los Alamitos Unified School District to significantly support the installation of a video surveillance system at Los Alamitos High School. The 15 camera system is being installed this summer and will be operational for the start of the 2016-17 school year.

American Legion names new board
The American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 716, Los Alamitos has elected and installed their 2016-2017 officers.
The American Legion supports veterans, their families and the community.

Los Al All Stars qualify for So Cal State Championships
The Los Alamitos Girls Softball All-Star teams had a chance to qualify for the Southern California All Star “B” State Championships. The 8 and Under team did qualify with a second place finish at the District Championships at Aliso Viejo on June 26.
After dropping their second-round game, the 8U Red All-Stars battled back through the elimination bracket to reach the title game.
Of their eight games, the 8U Red team went to an International Tie-Breaker in five games.
Undefeated Surf City Tourney Champs
FC Premier’s Girls 2004 new team, coached by Lyle Stamps, competed in the 2016 Surf City Tournament on June 25-26. Over the course of the tournament the team went undefeated and outscored their opponents 11 to 3. They played four games and came out on top with 36 points. The second place team had 23 points. This is their seconnd tournament together as a team. Los Al High graduates receive scholarships
The Seal Beach International Friendship Association recently awarded the 2016 June Roughton Hopkins Memorial Scholarship of $1,500 each to two Los Alamitos High School seniors who graduated in June.
Renee Kimberlin Congdon of College Park East in Seal Beach will be attending Colgate University in upstate New York, majoring in International Relations and Psychology.
Cypress Soroptimist’s new board members
The 2016-2017 Soroptimist International of Cypress Board Members were installed to their new officers at an appetizer reception meeting June 22. Incoming President, Julie Jordan made it fun with an Olympics theme. Each board member got a medal related to her position.
Locals receive Eagle Scout honor
Forrest Wissuchek, Haddee Hammoud, and Jacob Gregg recently completed requirements that grants them the highest rank in Boy Scouting: the Rank of Eagle Scout.
As one of the culminating requirements to reach this high rank, each scout had to find a beneficiary (a non-profit organization) that had a need for something that could be designed and built by a group of boy scouts and their leaders.

Universal Studios Hollywood unlocked the iconic “Don’t’ Open, Dead Inside” doors to usher in its all-new “The Walking Dead” permanent daytime attraction, based on AMC’s top-rated television series and the most watched show in cable television history, which officially opened to the public on Monday, July 4.

Frieda’s executive receives honor
Jackie Caplan Wiggins, along with nine others from the greater Long Beach area were honored during The Long Beach Cancer League’s 41st annual gala on June 4.
