King and Queen of Hearts visit summer enrichment camp

The Los Alamitos Education Foundation’s King and Queen of Hearts graced the campus of Rossmoor Elementary with their presence during the second session of LAEF’s 8th Annual Summer Enrichment.
While visiting, King Brian Leibl, Rossmoor resident and Los Alamitos High School parent, visited the Outrageously Cool Science class and helped the kids with experiments.
Queen Kerrie DaVanon, owner of Happy Hour Fit Club, district parent and a former 1st grade teacher, read to the students in the Jump-Start Kindergarten Phonics class.
Music teacher charged for lewd acts on children
A music teacher was charged last week with committing lewd acts on two students, who were each under the age of seven.
Investigators are looking to identify additional victims of Randal “Randy” Letcher Scott, 57, who taught at the Music Town music school, which has locations in Cypress and Irvine.
A Day of Celebration at the Cypress Festival







Pancake breakfast, 5K & 10K Run/Walk, baseball game, K-9 demonstration, live entertainment, vendor booths, non-profits, kid zone, arts & crafts, chili and salsa cook-off and car show; it was all there at the Cypress Community Festival July 22 at Oak Knoll Park.
At the car show, dozens of cars were on display to entertain visitors. Many of the car owners sat and answered questions about their car.
Local rotary club hosts estate lawyer
The Los Alamitos/Seal Beach Rotary held its regular meeting at Griffins Grill on July 18. The Club welcomed as its main speaker Marty Burbank, JD, LLM.
Burbank is the owner of OC Elder Law, where he specializes in Estate and Tax Planning.
Oversight needed over OC Law Enforcement
The recent unexplained death of a young adult jail inmate adds fuel to the ongoing fire within Orange County law enforcement.
On Monday it was reported that the family of Danny Pham, a Westminster resident, has filed a claim against the County for his death.
Pham died July 3, just days before he was scheduled to be released from a six-month sentence for auto theft.
The OC Sheriff’s Department, which runs the jail, and the OC Prosecutor, have not released any information concerning the details of Pham’s death in custody.
Students learn ‘wacky tennis’

The Youth Center’s Camp SHARK Wacky Tennis Academy recently held at Rossmoor Park taught its students the fundamentals of the game during a week long class recently.

Cypress Senior Center celebrates July birthdays
Did you know the Cypress Senior Center lunch program celebrates senior birthdays each month? Last week, on July 17, 2017, the lunch program celebrated July birthdays with cupcakes provided by Vernon Atwood with Right at Home. Lunch is provided by SeniorServ. Many participants celebrated their special day. Cypress residents 60 and up celebrate their birthday with the senior center for free. All others 60 years and older are suggested to make a donation of $3 for lunch. There is a charge of $5 per meal for those under 60 years of age.
Badfish having a great time

Local roller derby is alive and well. Women from Badfish Roller Derby met last Saturday for a member-only bout.
“Usually, our all-star team competes against other teams,” said a woman known as That’s My Jam, who is the Vice President for the Badfish League, does bout production, and serves as the event announcer. “Tonight we are competing against our own girls.”
Another Shooting
Another local shooting has darkened our community.
For those of you who haven’t seen or read about it, a Los Alamitos Police Captain and the Westminster City Clerk were found shot to death Monday morning in the police captain’s Seal Beach apartment.
The shootings took place Sunday evening following the Clerk’s 911 phone call for help.
Police responded with swat teams, treating it as a “barricade” situation.
Orange County charity awards $10,000 to Cypress club
On June 21, the Boys & Girls Club of Cypress was honored at the Orange County Ronald McDonald House as a 2016 RMHCSC Community Grant Recipient. With the support from McDonald Cypress restaurant owner Isabelle Villasenor and restaurant manager Leisy Torres, the club will be awarded a $10,000 grant to purchase laptops for its technology lab.
FC Premier edges undefeated team to win tournament
The FC Premier Girls 04 team won the inaugural Fullerton Rangers Summer Open this past weekend.
FC Premier began the tournament with a 4-1 win against the Strikers of Newport Mesa and while that game was at 8 a.m., the team’s following game was at 10:30 a.m., which meant very little time to rest and to recover.
Adding to the pressure was the fact it was FC Premier’s second match of the tourney but their opponent first match.
St. Hedwig graduate awarded scholarship
St. Hedwig eigth grade graduate Caden Contreras was recently awarded a Notre Dame Club of Orange County Scholarship Award for Outstanding Community Service.
Board president Paul Irving said Contreras was honored for exemplifying what it means to “give back” by volunteering and participating in a host of community service programs while at St. Hedwig.
Contreras is one of eight Orange County students recognized for their school service.
Cypress native graduates basic training
U.S. Air Force Airman Sean T. Stewart graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.
The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training also earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

This year’s 33rd Annual College Park North 4th of July Parade and Picnic was dedicated to the honor and memory of Doug Houck. He was a wonderful friend, ball game founder, pitcher and neighbor for 44 years who passed away on June 2.
Science of Slime inspires kids in Los Al
It’s ooey, gooey and sticky. Making slime is just one of many summer activities thrilling kids at The Youth Center’s Camp S.H.A.R.K. in Rossmoor Park. More than 35 kids recently learned how to mix polymers as part of scientific activities meant to inspire them to pursue science when they grow up.

Interesting Interchange ‘Improvement’
When you hear about the “I-605/Katella Avenue Interchange Project” you immediately think about the “Village 605 Project.”
After all, the Village 605 Project is the 113,880 square foot shopping center project scheduled to be built at, you guessed it, the northeast corner of the I-605/Katella Avenue Interchange.
The Village 605 shopping center project has caused quite a stir in Los Alamitos, Rossmoor and Cypress, due to concerns over pedestrian safety, traffic and the size of the project’s freeway sign.
Fryer Basketball Academy wins Summer Finale tourney
This past weekend, the Fryer Basketball Academy (FBA), a 10U-travel basketball team based out of Seal Beach and Los Alamitos won the San Gabriel Valley “Summer Finale” by outscoring its opponents by a combined 202-86 margin while going a perfect 5-0.
