This year’s 33rd Annual College Park North 4th of July Parade and Picnic was dedicated to the honor and memory of Doug Houck. He was a wonderful friend, ball game founder, pitcher and neighbor for 44 years who passed away on June 2.
The parade started on Kaylor Avenue with a convertible driven by Bob Conway, with Nancy Houck, Doug’s wife, and Los Alamitos Mayor Shelley Hasselbrink, then followed by a large crowd with a decorated bike, trike, wagon, scooter or stroller, and all wearing patriotic attire and carrying flags. At the conclusion of the Parade, pictured is a Commendation Certificate being presented to Nancy on behalf of the Los Alamitos City Council by Mayor Hasselbrink.
A picnic and softball game followed and leading off the pitching was Doug’s son Mark Houck and a large group of enthusiastic ball players of all sizes and all ages. At the conclusion of the game was a really spirited water balloon toss to end a happy day for everyone, and especially to “welcome” all the new College Park North residents to the neighborhood.
