All Stars headed to regional tourney
The St. Hedwig Pony Baseball 10U All Stars took second place in the Pony District tournament recently to advance to the Pony Region Tournament, which began on July 13.

Woman’s Club gives back to Vets
The ladies of the Rossmoor Woman’s Club have been busy packing backpacks for our Veterans.
Sheri Mansfield recently delivered the loaded packs after she, Ellen Odell, Robin Elliott and Louise Newald packed most of them with toiletries for men, a few for women and some were left empty so recipients could fill them on their own. Mansfield was able to present one to a disabled vet in his wheelchair, while in the volunteer office.
Local resident graduates as a physician assistant
Rossmoor resident Tess Wianecki recently graduated from Western University of Health Sciences, College of Allied Health Professions. Tess received her Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies with honors in the top 10 percent of her class as an Alpha Eta member, National Honors Society. Tess graduated from Los Alamitos High School in 2010. She plans on marrying her fiancé in August and will begin her practice this fall.

Summer time fun at the Orange County Fair


Summer time is fair time at the Orange County Fair. From July 14 – August 13 2017, enjoy “Farm Fresh Fun,” rides, games, entertainment, food, and more.
The fair is open from noon to midnight Wednesday-Friday and from 11 a.m. to midnight Saturday-Sunday. General admission is $12 Wednesday through Friday and $14 on weekends. Senior (60+) and youth (6-12) tickets can be purchased for $7.

Cypress’ Crossing Guard of the Year
The All City Management Service recently named Armando Paraiso the Crossing Guard of the Year. Paraiso has been a kitchen volunteer mainstay since October 2013 at the Cypress Senior Center. ACMS supervises the activities of all crossing guards in the nation. Paraiso was selected from among the hundreds of crossing guards operating in the Orange County area. Paraiso works at the Ball-Graham intersection, near Walker Street.
Winning scratcher sold in Cypress
Winning $10 million on a California Lottery California Gold Scratchers game would be enough excitement for anyone. But factor in the fact that two police units raced to the winning store location, and you quickly have memories for a lifetime! “Oh absolutely, it was quite incredible. But I like to keep to myself, so I snuck off and left as soon as I could,” said Richard Maciel, owner of the $10 million lucky ticket.
Extraordinary locals honored
Law enforcement personnel and others from Los Alamitos, Westminster and other cities throughout Orange County and Los Angeles County were recognized on June 28 for their efforts to solve crimes and bring assistance to crime victims. Two individuals from Los Alamitos and one from Westminster were included in the recognition of 17 award recipients at the Crime Survivors Hopeful Healing Gratitude Luncheon recently.
Open house held for I-605, Katella project
The OC Transportation Authority and Caltrans held a public open house concerning a project to renovate the I-605/Katella interchange on Thursday, June 29.
The event was held at the Los Alamitos Community Center with about 50-60 people in attendance.
The project was initiated by OCTA in 2005/06 as one of the many transportation projects funded by County sales tax Measure M-2. The project’s purpose is to enhance safety and traffic flow in the interchange.

Professional of the Year award given to local
The Boys & Girls Club of Cypress congratulated its very own Site Director, Samantha Johnson for receiving the very prestigious Dos Manos Program Professional of the Year Award for the “Big Orange” Chapter of the Association of Boys & Girls Clubs Professionals.
The award is given to a member of the chapter that best promotes true professionalism in the field; maintains a high standard of ethical conduct in the movement; and consistently assists others throughout the County.

Los Al rower makes All-American list
Brianna Wynne was recently named to the 2017 Pocock Lightweight All-America team.
She was chosen by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association.
Earlier this month, Wynne helped her University of Wisconsin team rally to a third place finish at the Rowing Association National Championship after the eight-person lightweight varsity squad she rowed with placed fourth in a race at the event.
Wynne, who’s a 2014 graduate of Los Al High School, is currently a junior at the University of the Wisconsin.
Community leaders honored in Cypress
Business and civic leaders from Cypress gathered to honor local community leaders at The Business Awards and Installation Dinner, held at Old Ranch Country Club.
The event is a highly anticipated occasion, which hosted by the Cypress Chamber of Commerce.
An especially significant recognition of the night was the Lifetime Achievement Award, which was presented to Gloria Livingston by last year’s winner Gay Hannah.
Cypress airman graduates from basic training
U.S. Air Force Airman Steven M. Markarian graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in San Antonio, Texas.
The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.
Airmen who complete basic training also earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
