Griffins falter in fourth

After a scoreless first half, the Los Alamitos High football team was unable to contain the Edison offense in the fourth quarter. The Chargers scored 17 fourth-quarter points for a 24-14 win over the Griffins in a Sunset League game on Friday at Veteran’s Stadium in Long Beach.

Los Alamitos (5-2, 1-1) had 153 passing yards and two touchdowns from quarterback Cody Marshall, but could not muster much of a run attack against the Charger defense. Marshall connected with Dashawn Gordon for a 22-yard touchdown strike in the third quarter that finally broke a scoreless tie, giving the Griffins a 7-0 lead.

But the Chargers leaned on running back Marquis Ross, who finished with 153 rushing yards. Donald Rice would add two short touchdown runs, late in the third and early in the fourth quarter, to give the Chargers a 14-7 lead.

Ross would add a 22-yard touchdown run later in the fourth quarter to push the Charger lead to 21-7. But the Griffins would answer with a scoring drive that culminated with a 29-yard touchdown pass from Marshall to Richie Molina which cut the lead to 21-14, just over a minute later.

But the Chargers were able to run out most of the clock before adding a field goal with :17 left in the game to seal the win.

The Griffins will travel to Westminster High on Friday at 7 p.m. to take on Fountain Valley. The Barons are 3-4 and 0-2 in league play. The Griffins now stand tied for second place with Newport Harbor at 1-1 in league play. Huntington Beach is tied with Edison at 2-0 atop the league standings. The Griffins will finish league play at Huntington Beach on Oct. 26, and at home against Newport Harbor on Nov. 1.
