Cypress rallies to defeat Tustin

 

After falling behind 14-0 after the first quarter, the Cypress High football team roared back to down Tustin, 41-21, in an Empire League game on Friday at Western High.

The Centurions (6-1, 2-2) were led by Taylor Williams, who had 174 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Cypress had tied the game at 14-14 by halftime, but the Tillers responded early in the third, with a touchdown run to regain the lead, 21-14. But after Quinten Pounds returned the eusuing kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown, the Centurions took back the momentum and controlled the game from there.

Williams added another touchdown run, Bobby Brito caught a touchdown pass from Nick Buras, and Buras capped the scoring with a 20 touchdown run about midway through the fourth quarter.

Cypress plays at Valencia on Friday at 7 p.m. in another Empire League game.

 

Kennedy rallies to beat Pacifica

Adrian Quezada connected with Derrick Deese for a 40-yard touchdown pass with

59 seconds remaining in the game, to lift the Kennedy High football team to an 18-14 win over Pacifica, in an Empire League game on Friday at Bolsa Grande High.

Pacifica had taken a 14-3 lead early in the fourth quarter, when Nick Garcia connected with Tirek Benjamin on a 73-yard touchdown pass. Kennedy was able to cut the lead to 14-10 a few minutes later, when Quezada ran in from two yards out. T.J. Williams led the Fighting Irish (4-3, 1-1) with 105 rushing yards and Joey Ortega added 91. Quezada finished with 58 rushing yards and 78 yards passing, all to Deese. 

Kennedy returns to Empire League play as the road team against Western High, at 7 p.m. on Friday, at Western.

 

Griffins roll Sailors

Los Alamitos football overcame a game Newport Harbor team on Thursday, as they eventually rolled over the Sailors, 62-27, in a Sunset League game.

The Griffins (6-1, 2-0) remained tied atop the league standings, with a home game against last-place Marina on the schedule for Thursday. Newport Harbor kept the game close early on, as they trailed just 14-10 after the first quarter. But the Griffins had built a 35-20 lead by halftime and began to pull away in the third, outscoring the Sailors, 19-7, during that span.

Denzal Brantley led the offense with 193 rushing yards and two touchdowns. He scored a third touchdown on a 51-yard pass receptions from quarterback Jack Telenko just before the half. Matt Locher scored three touchdowns on short yardage plays near the goal line and also added a 41-yard interception return for a touchdown late in the third. Telenko finished with 254 passing yards.
