A joyful group of local citizens gathered on Saturday to officially take over possession of the St. Isidore Historical Plaza, from the Diocese of Orange.

The event was called a grand opening, as the St. Isidore Historical Plaza Comitie del Amor, was handed the keys to the plaza in ceremonial fashion. The group spearheaded efforts to raise finds and purchase the plaza from the Diocese of Orange to prevent it from being sold and redeveloped.

Diocese of Orange Bishop Kevin Vann was one of several dignitaries on hand and he spoke to the gathering. Also on hand was Father Steve Sallot of the Diocese of Orange and Father Christopher Heath from St. Hedwig Church. The day was a celebration of the efforts of those who hoped to preserve the plaza for future generations.

“To think that St. Isidore Historical Chapel and Plaza will always be here makes me very happy. What a fine early California site for the City of Los Alamitos,” Comitie member Anita Schommer said.
