Walker Jr. High sails to the finish

More than 300 students from Walker Jr High school in La Palma braved the waters of the John F. Kennedy High School pool on Wednesday May 25, as students piloted (and paddled) their boats in the races of the 11th Annual Walker Regatta.
The Regatta features boats built by 8th grade student teams in two categories (one- and two-person boats) that are constructed from recyclable bottles, tape, PVC pipe and plastic wrap.

Local Whole Foods donates to LAEF

LAEF (Los Alamitos Education Foundation) recently partnered with Whole Foods Market (Marina Pacifica) for one of the store’s “5 percent Days” which is part of Whole Food’s community giving program and Whole Food’s commitment to supporting local educational organizations.  The event was held on March 21 and LAEF earned 5 percent of that day’s net sales.

VANS holds service day in Cypress

VANS employees recently volunteered at Arnold/Cypress Park and Oak Knoll Park with the Cypress Recreation and Community Services department.
Over 80 employees from the Corporate Office and Distribution Center spent their service day painting restrooms, snack shacks, picnic tables and benches.
Past service days include clearing the Cypress Nature Park’s five walking trails and surrounding area, assisting park staff in mulching trees at Oak Knoll Park and painting the roller hockey rink at Arnold/Cypress Park.

Cypress Rotary raises money to fight polio

The Cypress Rotary Club joined with other service clubs recently at the Cypress Police Department’s Open House.
Rotary members handed out over 900 hot dogs to citizens enjoying the exhibits, BMX bikers, and departmental tours.
Rotary collected $174 from donations for Polio Plus. Rotary has been fighting polio since the 70s and it has been eliminated in all but two countries (Afghanistan and Pakistan).

Los Alamitos falls to Orange Lutheran in semifinals

The Los Alamitos High softball team hung around but could not get the key hit it needed as they lost to Orange Lutheran in the CIF-SS Division 1 semifinals on May 31 at Los Alamitos High.
Ryan Denhart allowed just four hits, while Orange Lutheran’s Maddy Dwyer kept the Griffins to just two.
The game was a 1-0 battle until the fifth inning when Orange Lutheran’s Lauren Espalin drilled as two-run home run to extend the lead to 3-0.

LAYB Angels sweep Bronco division

The Angels from Los Alamitos Youth Baseball (LAYB) recently won the Bronco division title.  The team went undefeated in league play, in addition to winning three straight games in playoffs with an overall record of 17-0.  Pictured here is the team showing off their first place trophies and Championship rings. Undefeated season for local soccer team

The Black Shamrocks of Los Al AYSO Region 159 finished as undefeated Champions of the Boys U-10 Area E Spring Soccer REC League, with a 3-0 win over the sparky Spartans of West Grove, Saturday at Chapman Sports Park.
The Shamrocks had luck in bunches, opening the season with two one-goal wins. Following that, the team then needing two come from behind ties to complete the Spring soccer season without a loss.
The Shamrocks rolled four shut-outs, and the defense allowed the fewest goals in the league.

Pony squad takes first

The LAYB Pony Cardinals won first place in the regular season with a record of 15-3 earning the trophies shown and also won the league playoff in a hard-fought defensive game against the Dodgers, which earned them the championship rings the boys are sporting.  Pictured here from left to right, front row: Jake Romo and Brock Villegas. Savanna loses CIF-SS final

Savanna High’s softball team had played in two consecutive CIF-SS finals, but the end has been bitter as they lost for the second consecutive year to Paraclete of Lancaster.
Paraclete broke open a tied game in the top of the seventh inning to capture the title with an 8-4 win on Saturday at Bill Barber Park in Irvine.

Spring into Summer this year with the Youth Center

Supported by businesses and the community, the Youth Center is seeking to keep kids in constant motion this summer with their Summer Day Camp, Teen Camp, Summer Music Program, and Leadership Academy.
The Summer Day Camp offers kids ages 5 to 12 years old an action-packed and affordable way to spend their time in both on-site activities at Rossmoor Park and at optionaloff-site field trips.

Local Rotary club donates $500 to Los Al High Interact Club

The Rotary Club of Los Alamitos/ Seal Beach presented a check for $500 to support the Los Alamitos High School Interact Club’s “Water for South Sudan” project at its recent meeting.
The money came from donations collected at the Rossmoor Community Festival, which was then matched by members of the club.

Roaring 20’s Senior Prom is a huge hit

“Roaring 20’s Senior Prom” held in May, was successful and so much fun for all those in attendance  With approximately 100 tickets sold, rave reviews from participants are still pouring in, thanking hardworking city staff and members of the Los Alamitos Volunteer Program for transforming the Los Alamitos Community Center into a fabulous 20’s themed party. Senior Club member Nancy Giusti says, “Great job – it was the best one yet. Even the food was great.”

Something new is cooking at the Los Alamitos Senior Lunch & Bread Program and you’re invited to check it out.  
Every Tuesday morning, come to the Community Center at 10911 Oak Street for a free exercise class at 9:30 called Balance and Fitness offered by the North Orange County Community College District, and then stay for a delicious lunch and friendly conversation.

Lunch activities begin at 10:30am and include birthday & anniversary celebrations, live entertainment, arts & crafts, card games and trivia games.

Sunburst Academy hangs with LA Lakers trainers

The Sunburst Youth Challenge Academy hosted trainers and coaches of the Los Angeles Lakers Youth Foundation and Barton Brothers Fitness for an afternoon of basketball and training recently.

Cadets participated in a variety of exercises, which replicated the very same fitness drills that pro-athletes utilize in their daily routine such as speed and agility training, plyometrics, hurdles and more.

Lead by the Lakers’ Youth Foundation Coordinator Daryl Roper, cadets participated in additional shootout challenges for Lakers prizes.

Local set to teach English in Malaysia

Los Al’s Marry Trotter was one of 13 Villanova University students recently selected to receive a 2016-2017 Fulbright U.S. Student Grants as a part of The Fulbright Program, which is a prestigious international education exchange program sponsored by the United States government.

The grants allows Fulbright recipients to serve as international cultural ambassadors by performing research or teaching English in foreign countries.

Los Al High drama students pick up acting awards

Several members of the Los Alamitos High School Drama program attended the John Raitt Awards for Youth (JRAY) ceremony last weekend where they were nominated for several awards as one school out of 20-plus schools that participated in the program.

The following students were nominated for awards: Macy Boren for Best Female Cameo in a Musical, Shelby Marsh for Featured Actress in a Musical, Micaela Erickson for Supporting Actress in a Musical, and Hasti Bakian for Leading Actress in a Musical.

Several students were collectively nominated for Best Sets in a Musical.
