School Board Honors Parents of Fallen Los Al Firefighter

 

The parents of a Los Alamitos High School graduate, and a fallen firefighter, were honored by the school district board for donating $40,000 in equipment to the school’s fire technology program through an organization they founded in memory of their son.

Successful restaurant expands into Los Al

 

A long-time staple in Long Beach recently expanded into Los Alamitos. The popular    Potholder Café, with three locations in Long Beach, has taken over the restaurant space on Katella Avenue, across from the racecourse.

RCSD honors Superintendent Kropp

At its regular board meeting of April 10, 2018 the Rossmoor Community Services District Board honored “super” Superintendent Dr. Sherry Kropp with a proclamation of commendation for her outstanding service to the Los Alamitos Unified School District and the Rossmoor Community. Superintendent Kropp has served the School District since 1985 as a teacher and in various administrative capacities before being selected as Los Al’s Superintendent and designated as the 2018 Orange County Superintendent of the Year.

Round?the?Clock Military Exercises to take place at Joint Forces Training Base

Visiting military units will be engaged in round-the-clock training exercises at the Joint Forces Training Base beginning Tuesday, April 7 and concluding on Tuesday, April 14. These exercises will include the use of blank ammunition and residents of communities located near the base may hear gunfire and simulated explosions at times throughout the duration of the exercises.

Flight operations at Los Alamitos Army Airfield will experience periods of increased air traffic and aircraft noise connected with the exercises, including aircraft landing and departing outside of normal operating hours on several evenings.

Air operations are tentatively scheduled to run until 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 11, and until almost midnight on Monday, April 13.

Efforts will be taken to minimize any inconvenience to neighbors associated with these training exercises.

Cypress resident inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame

 

On April 15, Kenny Torres of Cypress was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater Oklahoma.

The ceremony was conducted in Laguna Hills. Kenny wrestled at Bolsa Grande High School in Garden Grove and was an All American at Golden West College. Kenny has coached at several local schools for 30 years. His teams have won multiple league championships. He has coached individual league champions, CIF Champions, Masters Champions and State Placers though out his career.

LAUSD welcomes new McAuliffe Principal

 

Dr. Ryan Weiss-Wright will be the new principal for McAuliffe Middle School beginning July 1. Dr. Weiss-Wright was introduced to the Los Alamitos Unified School District Board by Superintendent, Dr. Sherry Kropp.

“He has a passion for middle school students, for making a difference and connecting with them,” Kropp said.

Cypress gets upper hand with big win over Valencia

Cypress High baseball is looking to win a sixth straight Empire League title. But the Centurions were co-champs last year, thanks, in part, to Valencia coming to Cypress blanking the Centurions, 2-0, to grab a share of the title.

Returning players were motivated to get the early upper hand on the Tigers this year as the two teams met on Wednesday at Cypress High. The motivation worked, as the Centurions pounded the Tigers, 11-0, to improve to 3-0 in league play.

Council confirms action against state law

 

The Los Alamitos City Council listened to several more hours of public comments before voting by the same 4-1 count, to approve a city ordinance that exempts the city from the California Sanctuary law, SB54.

The contentious debate drew hundreds of people on both sides, as the council was set to approve the law in a second reading, after initially passing the ordinance on April 16.

Camp captures national championship

Kennedy High sophomore Lauren Madison Camp, recently captured a national wrestling championship.

The title was among a long list of accomplishments for the Kennedy High athlete. Head wrestling coach Mike Kim said he believes it is the first-ever national championship for any sport or athlete from Kennedy High.

Los Al High Honors Hero of the Heart

 

Anne Vida, a longtime volunteer in Los Alamitos schools, is the recipient of the 2018 Hero of the Heart award from Los Alamitos High School. In a recent presentation to the Los Alamitos Unified School District Board, Principal Dr. Brandon Martinez said there is “no way to capture all the reasons why” Vida was the school’s unanimous choice for the award. Among many contributions, he said, she has donated hundreds of hours of her time assisting with fundraising, show choir and School Site Council and is currently president of the PTSA.

Long-time Choir Pianist Honored by Los Al School Board

Eddy Clement, who for 16 years has provided music behind Los Alamitos High School’s perennial national champion choirs, has been named a classified employee of the year by the school district board.

Los Alamitos High School Principal Dr. Brandon Martinez, who introduced Clement to a standing ovation of students, teacher and administrators attending the board meeting, said he is far more than an accompanist.

Centurions get boost going into league behind Chaffee no-hitter

Judging by their record, it might appear that the Cypress High baseball team had just an average pre-season. But with a young team and the third toughest schedule in the CIF-SS, Head Coach John Weber likes the progress he has seen in the Centurions. Cypress enters the Empire League with a 10-7-1 record and big boost of energy after capping the National Classic Tournament with a 4-0 win behind a no-hitter by junior pitcher Tyler Chaffee.

Citizens showing resistance to council ordinance

The City of Los Alamitos continued to feel resistance from groups opposing the passing of a local ordinance that calls for the city to opt out of the California Values Act, stating that the state law conflicted with the U.S. Constitution.

But county groups and some local residents are now requesting records from the city to confirm that there has not been any outside influence that may have encouraged the council’s action, and started a wave of other cities taking similar actions.

Author visits Youth Center to share his new book

As part of a book drive with OptumRx in Cypress, a division of UnitedHealth Care, the Youth Center’s RASCALS Reading Program recently got a visit from Jonathan Gallo, author of The World of Oneiro, which touches on his personal experience of being a father of a child with special needs and imparts that everyone can find their place in the world.

Los Al opts out of California Values Act

 

After listening to more than 50 speakers during public comments, the Los Alamitos City Council voted 4-1, to enact an ordinance that claims the city is exempting itself from enforcement of the California Sanctuary State law.
