Los Alamitos stumbled in a key Sunset League showdown on Friday, as they fell to Huntington Beach, 28-7, at Huntington Beach High.

The loss puts the Griffins in a must-win situation in their final game of the regular season to contend for an automatic playoff berth. Los Alamitos fell to 2-2 in league and 6-3 overall with the loss.

The Griffins must end the season against Newport Harbor, a team that defeated Huntington Beach the week prior. Quarterback Cody Marshall threw for 200 yards, but the Griffins couldn’t muster much on the ground. Ricardo Molina had 63 yards rushing and the lone Griffin touchdown in the first quarter.

Meanwhile, the Griffin defense had trouble slowing down the Oiler ground game as their leading rusher, Bowen Breunig had 144 yards on the ground.

The Griffins host Newport Harbor on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Veteran’s Stadium.
