Griffins dominate Wildcats

After a hard-fought, defensive battle on the Vets’ Stadium field in Long Beach, the Los Alamitos Griffins came out victorious against the University High of Los Angeles Wildcats by a score of 40-0 last week.

Notable performances included junior wide receiver Dashawn Gordon and senior quarterback Cody Marshall. Gordon ran nine times for 103 yards and scored two touchdowns, while Marshall threw for 230 yards and scored a touchdown on a quarterback keeper that gave the Griffins a 20-0 lead in the first quarter. Senior running back Dejohn Ruffin, standing in for the injured Ricardo Molina, ran for 121 yards on 19 carries.

In the first quarter, the Griffins had a 13-0 lead, as Marshall connected with Adam Zunino and Gordon for touchdown passes of 22 and 16 yards. After University’s kickoff, the Griffins managed to score with 21 seconds left in the quarter when Gordon took a swing pass and broke two tackles en route to the end zone.

In the second quarter, the Griffins were held off the scoreboard with key penalties hurting scoring opportunities. Marshall got the Griffins’ scoring streak in the third quarter, and raised the score 26-0 during the third quarter, followed by Gordon’s touchdown, ultimately making the Griffins final score 40-0.

Los Al’s overall record improved 2-1 while University fell to 1-2. This marked coach John Barnes’ 297th win in his 33 years coaching Los Alamitos. The Los Alamitos defense held the Wildcats to less than 50 yards of total offense in the shutout.

The Griffins will host Lynwood High School on Thursday, Sept. 20, at 7 p.m. at Long Beach Veteran’s Stadium.
