Griffins catch fire in playoff win

The Los Alamitos High boys soccer team advanced to the second round of the CIF-SS Division I playoffs with a 4-1 win over Buena High of Ventura on Friday at Laurel High School.

The Los Alamitos High boys soccer team advanced to the second round of the CIF-SS Division I playoffs with a 4-1 win over Buena High of Ventura on Friday at Laurel High School.

The Griffins jumped out to a 2-0 halftime lead and added two more goals in the second half. Brett Hall, Kevin Herring, Sam Rudich and Daniel Weis each had a goal for the Griffins. Goal keeper Connor Fatone was credited with four saves.

The Griffins controlled the ball for much of the first half, but could not find the back of the net until the 36th minute of the game. Hall finally broke the scoreless tie when he capitalized on a loose ball in front of the net.

Aron Rudich got around a defender on the right side and centered a pass in front of the net. The Buena defense tried to clear it out, but it was held in and Hall got the ball in front a defender. He turned to get around the defender and squeezed a shot under the goal keeper.

About two minutes later, freshman Herring addd the second goal on a similar rush. Aron Rudich again created the pressure from the right side. This time in the scramble in front of the net, it was Herring who corralled the rebound off the goal keeper and punched the ball into the net.

The Griffins continue in the second round with a game at Santa Margarita today at 5 p.m.
