The Cypress High football team missed on some key opportunities and fell short against Corona del Mar, 37-24, in a nonleague game at Newport Harbor High on Friday.

The Centurions rallied from a 30-10 deficit with two late touchdowns to cut the lead to 30-24 with a little more than three minutes left in the game, but could not get any closer.

Five turnovers and a missed scoring opportunity from the Corona del Mar one yard line helped doom the Centurions early in the game.

Jake Brito had a 59-yard run to set up the Centurions as the one yard line, but Cypress stumbled from there. A holding penalty nullified what would have been a Brito touchdown. Brito finished with 150 yards rushing on 22 carries and scored twice for Cypress.

The Centurions return to Empire League play on Friday at 7 p.m. at Western High with their big rivalry game against Kennedy.
