Cypress election, council meeting recap

At last week’s Cypress City Council meeting, Paulo Morales was voted in as Mayor and Jon Peat was voted in as Mayor ProTem.
The amount of money spent by different organizations related to the Measure GG ballot initiative was also reported at the meeting.
Reports submitted to the City Clerk indicate the following:
In a report with the filing date of Nov. 4, Los Alamitos Race Course and Cypress GC reported they spent $194,694.98.
On their report with a filing date of October 31, Cypress Citizens Preserving Open Space reported they spent $2,833.97.

The OC Registrar of Voters declared the results of the election as official on Dec. 6.
Official Election Results
Cypress City Council: Rob Johnson and Mariellen Yarc were re-elected to a second 4 year term.
Rob Johnson           9,369 31.7%
Mariellen Yarc         8,921 30.2%
Mike Schoppman    5,669 19.2%
Giselle A. Blanco    5,596 18.9%
Measure GG – Cypress Town Center and Commons Specific Plan: Measure GG was defeated by 433 votes or 2.2%.
Yes    9,626 48.9%
No   10,059 51.1%
Analysis:
There were 26,112 registered voters in Cypress for this election.
A total of 19,645 (9,626 + 10,059) residents voted on Measure GG which is a 75.4% registered voter turnout.
More residents voted on Measure GG than voted for 2 City Council Candidates. A total of 29,555 votes were cast for the 4 Council Candidates. Since everyone could vote for 2 people, that would mean an average of only 14,777 residents voted for 2 Council Candidates compared to 19,645 residents that voted on Measure GG.
As of Nov. 9 (the morning after the election), only 13,955 votes had been recorded as cast on Measure GG. By Dec. 6, a final total of 19,645 votes were recorded as cast on Measure GG. 5,730 ballots were added since the morning after the election which is a 41% increase. While the outcome remained that Measure GG was defeated 51.1% to 48.9%, it’s a reminder that it’s always best to stay cautious when declaring victory. As of the morning after the election, Measure GG was being defeated 51.3% to 48.7%. While the 5,730 votes still had more No votes it was only by 50.5% to 49.5%. The votes remaining after the election included: Vote by Mail Ballots, Provisional Ballots, Vote by Mail Ballots Returned to Polls, Election Day Paper Ballots, and Vote by Mail Ballots Rec’d After Election Day.
