The Boys and Girls Club of Cypress kicked off its summer program in June with almost 300 kids enrolled and more than 200 present at the club everyday.

“The purpose of the summer program is to provide a safe environment for kids of all ages at a low-cost,” says Executive Director Anne Hertz.

Every week of this nine-week program is dedicated to a certain theme, with activities pertaining to that theme. At the club, kids are encouraged to participate in recreational activities. This year, the program is offering an abundance of classes, fun field trips, and special events for the kids.

Classes offered through the summer program include Net Smartz: teaches kids internet safety skills and multimedia activities and Healthy Habits: teaches kids how to plan their meals and eat nutritiously. Kids have the opportunity to go on fun field trips once a week to places such as the Aquarium of the pacific, Knott’s Berry Farm, and John’s Incredible Pizza. Teens are also given fun field trips to the movies.

A new offering at the club this summer is the Summer Lunch Program, which provides hot, pre-bought meals to kids and fulfills the healthy eating requirements as recommended by a nutritionist that works for the club.

Throughout the week, the kids are also given the option to partake in recreational activities once a week at Cawthon Elementary School called Triple Play. Third Graders are exclusively given the option to take care of a garden area at King Elementary School,

given to the Boys and Girls Club by the City of Cypress.

The club holds many opportunities for families in need as a part of their mission. Throughout the summer, the club partners with We Care of Los Alamitos to provide free groceries and produce for families entitled “Summer Harvest.”  They also provide scholarships on a weekly basis to those who cannot afford the summer program for their child.

Improvements have been recently made to the club in the past month, with the University of Phoenix’s donation of chairs and renovation of the Teen Room.
