Challenge Grant to Help Feed Orange County

Mohamed A. El-Erian

Mohamed A. El-Erian, a longtime resident of Orange County and supporter of its Food Bank, is Chief Economic Adviser at Allianz, the corporate parent of PIMCO where he served as CEO and co-chief investment officer (2007–2014).

When Mohamed realized the devastating effects that the coronavirus pandemic would have on out-of-work families and other vulnerable segments of our population, he stepped up with a challenge grant of up to $250,000, agreeing to match $2 for every $1 donated until May 20th. The funds would enable the OC Food Bank, a program of Community Action Partnership of Orange County (CAP OC), to provide emergency food to meet the increased need in the County. “In over a decade of working with the OC Food Bank, I have never seen so many families turn to our committed colleagues for emergency help,” Mohamed said.

“It’s an unprecedented situation that comes at incredibly uncertain and unsettling times for all. It’s a privilege for me to support a donation challenge that helps families access emergency food. I hope others will join us in reducing the terrible risk of our neighbors going hungry during this horrible health and economic crisis.” The effects of the novel coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) and subsequent layoffs have left many out of work families searching for relief.

CAP OC provides a multitude of programs that help address immediate needs such as utility and rental assistance, financial empowerment and more. “This is an unprecedented time, where there are so many seeking our services. We are grateful for difference makers like Mohamed for his incredible support in our efforts to combat food insecurity. We could not do this work without the generosity and leadership of individuals,” says Gregory Scott, President & CEO of CAP OC.
