Arnold School in Cypress competed in the Orange County Math Field Day event on May 11 at Westminster High School as one of 48 schools participating. It was the first year that schools from both the north and south areas of Orange County competed in the same event.

After taking first place in the Rubik’s Cube team competition for the northern teams, Arnold students continued competing against the winning school from the south.  The results were so close that a “cube-off” was held. One Arnold student, Brian Cho, competed against one student from Castille School in the south. He was competing under the pressure of an entire gymnasium full of students and adults watching and cheering. Cho prevailed against the student from Castille to make Arnold School the Rubik’s Cube champions for all of Orange County.

In addition to the Rubik’s Cube competition, teams competed in the categories of Geometry, Measurement, Data Analysis, Algebraic Thinking, and Number Operations.  Arnold’s sixth grade team took second place in both Data Analysis and Number Operations.

The district proudly congratulates math team members Joseph Kim, Anusha Lingampally, Pallavi Prabhu, Anita Theng, Brian Cho, Jacob Do, Joshua Liu, James Min, James Chung, Joon Jun, Justin Nam and Varsha Sandadi.  Teachers Jan Wright and Katie Pham coached the team, spending many hours working with students after school to prepare for the event.
