Last spring, the Physical Education faculty at Los Alamitos High School met on multiple occasions to revise and revamp the P.E. instructional units.  A major addition to the curriculum this year is the SCUBA and snorkeling instructional unit.  The program began Monday, October 3 and continues through Thursday, October 27.  In conjunction with Left Coast SCUBA, the Los Alamitos High School P.E. staff is providing this opportunity to all students enrolled in Physical Education 9.
The SCUBA and snorkeling unit includes three major components – academics, dry runs, and in water pool training.  The academic portion introduces students to the physics of SCUBA, the effect it has on the human body, and how to select, size, and use SCUBA equipment properly.  In dry runs students learn necessary skills on the deck before entering the water.  In water pool training incorporates otter rolls, snorkel skills, finning techniques, use of regulators, and basic safety skills.  This instruction is conducted during school time under the direct supervision of a certified teacher and professional skin/SCUBA instructor.
While completion of this program will not grant the student SCUBA certification, it will give those interested in pursuing this level the opportunity to move closer towards this goal.
