Los Alamitos High School had a very successful performing arts weekend with the fall choir show and the start of the competition season for the marching band.

On Saturday, the Los Alamitos Entertainment Unit performed at Ayala High School in Chino Hills in the 3A division. Kicking off the first competition of the season with their show entitled, “Legends of the East,” the marching band managed to sweep all awards (Visual, Auxiliary, General Effect, Percussion, Music) and land in first place with a score of 78.30.

“We’re much farther than we were last year,” said Los Al’s Assistant Drum Major Brandon Toy. Along with our new band director and the confidence from our first performance, I predict that we will go far this season. The potential of the greatness our show possesses may rival even ‘Heartbeat,’ the last show that gave Los Alamitos a full sweep [of awards] from Ayala to Fresno championships.”

This weekend, the Los Al choir presented their fall show, “A New York State of Mind,” performing musical numbers from Broadway hits. The show opened with a rendition by Kevin Gooch of the timeless Mary Poppins song “Chim Chim Cher-ee.” Other notables from Act I included a rendition of Chicago’s “All That Jazz” by the advanced women’s ensemble, Soundtrax, the classic Aladdin number “A Whole New World” by Angela Alarco and Chance Perez and Wicked’s “I’m Not That Girl” by Axcent, the beginning women’s ensemble. And a performance of The Lion King’s “Circle of Life Reprise,” was performed from the entire choir ensemble. Act II notable performances include Phantom of the Opera’s “Masquerade” by the mixed choir ensemble Xpressions, followed by Newsies’ “Seize the Day” performed by the men’s choir, Xtreme. The advanced mixed show choir, Sound FX, ended the night with hits from the critically-acclaimed musical Rent, ending the night with a choir ensemble performance of “Seasons of Love.”
