During the month of October, Walker Junior High School celebrated and honored those with breast cancer. Fifth period classes had a coin drive competition raising over $1,200 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
During the month of October, Walker Junior High School celebrated and honored those with breast cancer. Fifth period classes had a coin drive competition raising over $1,200 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
Teacher Shannon Gohr’s seventh grade, fifth period class raised the most money bringing in $235.88. Students also had the opportunity to donate their hair to Locks of Love. Ten students participated in the hair-cutting event. For one student, eighth-grader Rachelle Park, it was her second year cutting and donating her hair for Locks of Love.
“My younger sister in elementary school is growing her hair so she can donate it when she comes to Walker in a few years,” Park said.
After two years the Locks of Love event is turning out to be a tradition at Walker. Jennifer Sasai, teacher and Renaissance student recognition coordinator also donated her hair.
“My mom is a breast cancer survivor. This is the third time I have donated my hair to Locks of Love. Some students were hesitant to cut their hair, but after hearing I was going to cut my hair too, they signed up,” Sasai said.
Three hairdressers from local salons donated their time to cut hair. Robin Bowman and Laurie Kitagawa of White Sands Salon in Los Alamitos, and Cristina Luka of Salon Rogue in Fullerton cut hair throughout the lunch period.
