Dear Editor,
Thank you, David Young, for your timely and important article, “Nonprofits see “uptick” in food insecurity.” As a member of St. Irenaeus Catholic Church, I know that our volunteer organization H.O.P.E. (Helping Other People Everyday) is concerned about the growing need for food in our community and the reduced supply. It is shameful that a country as rich as ours has decreased food availability to our most vulnerable, including families with children and the elderly.
H.O.P.E. is an all-volunteer organization that has served families in need since 1976. It assists needy families and individuals with USDA food and non-USDA food. The Christian Service Office also helps families in need of temporary assistance with transportation, shelter, and utility bills. Its services are supported by tax-deductible donations from individuals, businesses, schools, food banks, service clubs, and fundraising events. Approximately 60 tons of food is donated annually, in addition to financial contributions.
I am concerned that the demand for food will be greater than the food we can supply. If you want to donate to H.O.P.E., call St. Irenaeus Parish at (714) 826-0760.
