Los Alamitos High’s football team missed a chance to secure a top three finish in the Sunset League with a 31-28 overtime loss to Newport Harbor on Thursday at Veteran’s Stadium in Long Beach.

The Griffins held a 28-20 lead as they punted the ball away with 1:04 remaining in the game. But the Sailors would respond with an eight-play, 69-yard drive to cut the deficit to 28-26. Because of Griffin penalties, the Sailors had three shots at the two-point conversion before finally punching it in to force overtime.

Los Alamitos had the ball first in overtime, but turned it over on downs when a fourth and six play ended with a sack. The Griffins defense forced the Sailor to settle for a 37-yard field goal attempt on their possession, but Newport’s Michael Schultz converted it to give the Sailors the win and secure a playoff berth.

The Griffins had taken a 14-0 lead into halftime and led 14-7 heading into the fourth quarter. But the Sailors were able to tie the game early in the fourth quarter on a 62-yard touchdown pass.

The Griffins responded on the ensuing possession with a scoring drive that ended with Ricardo Molina going two yards off tackle for a touchdown that gave the Griffins a 21-14 lead with 6:31 left in the game. Quarterback Cody Marshall made a key play on second and nine, by avoiding a sack and finding Kendall Brownlow for an 18-yard completion to the Sailor two yard line.

But Newport Harbor would respond with drive of their own that ended with a touchdown pass with 4:18 left in the game. However, the point-after kick was wide and Los Alamitos held a 21-20 lead. Molina would extend the lead on the next play as he took the ball up the middle, bounced to the outside to avoid a tackle and beat the defense around the corner to go 80 yards for a touchdown that extended the Griffins’ lead to 28-20 with 4:05 left in the game.

The Griffins seemed to have the game in hand after Derrick Worthy intercepted a Newport pass with 3:03 left in the game. But the Sailor defense held and forced a punt with 1:04 left in the game to set up their game tying drive.

Los Alamitos (6-4, 2-3) received one of two at-large berths available in the Southwest Division and will open the playoffs at La Habra on Friday at 7 p.m.
