Griffins defeat Vikings for Aliso Cup title

The Los Alamitos High boys soccer team defeated Marina, 4-3, in a penalty kick shootout on Monday to capture the Aliso Cup Tournament Championship.

The Los Alamitos High boys soccer team defeated Marina, 4-3, in a penalty kick shootout on Monday to capture the Aliso Cup Tournament Championship.

The Griffins and Vikings played to a scoreless tie through regulation and overtime and had to settle the title in the shootout. Joe Reinard, Sam Rudich, Zach Way and Ozvaldo Yanez each converted their penalty shots, and goalkeeper Connor Fatone made a game-winning save on Marina’s fifth and final attempt.

On Saturday, the Griffins defeated JSerra, 3-1 and University High, 2-1 to reach the title game. Against JSerra, the Griffins got goals from Evan Bacani, Charlie Ross, and Yanez as they jumped out to a 2-1 halftime lead, adding an insurance goal in the second half.

In their second game on Saturday, the Griffins had goals from Bacani and Brett Hall was credited with an assist in the win over University High.

The Griffins have two road games upcoming as they travel to Long Beach Wilson today at 3 p.m. and will play at Paramount High next Tuesday, also at 3 p.m.
