It was standing room only as friends, family and students gathered at the Los Alamitos City Council meeting on Dec. 16, with government in action as the council elected a new mayor and mayor pro tem.
The city council unanimously voted in Council Member Gerri Graham-Mejia as the 2014 mayor, replacing current Mayor Warren Kusumoto. Graham-Mejia held the position of mayor pro tem for the last year.
Also unanimously elected in by the city council was Council Member Richard Murphy to be the new mayor pro tem.
Mayor elect Graham-Mejia said her goals for the city council were very basic for the upcoming year.
She said she wanted the council “to work together to get things done,” and that she wanted “to work together with the Los Alamitos Unified School District.”
Mayor Pro Tem elect Murphy was more specific on his goals. “Just to see a long term plan for the city’s projects like the resolution of the St. Isidore Chapel and Plaza, hopefully in a positive light, and to tie it into the general redevelopment for the city,” said Murphy.
Outgoing Mayor Kusumoto was recognized by Congressman Alan Lowenthal with a certificate of appreciation as well as other certificates from dignitaries including the mayor of Stanton for Kusumoto working together with them.
Also recognized for 30 years of service to Los Alamitos were Allen and Lauri McLean of Sir Speedy Printing, who have provided printing for many of Los Alamitos activities such as Race On The Base and the Wings, Wheels, Rotors & Expo.
