Huntington Beach High scored 21 unanswered points in the first quarter en route to a 31-15 win over Los Alamitos High in a non-league football game on Thursday at Huntington Beach High. The Oilers would add another touchdown early in the second quarter to extend the lead to 28-0.
The Griffins would get on the board late in the second quarter when junior quarterback Luke Osborn found sophomore receiver Jacob Sanchez for a 13-yard touchdown with 4:53 left in the second quarter. The Oilers would add a field goal on the final play of the first half to take a 31-7 lead into the break.
The Griffins defense was able to settle in and hold the Oilers scoreless in the second half, but the deficit was too much to overcome. Oiler senior quarterback Brady Edmunds finished with 160 yards passing and one touchdown. Senior running back Dallas Miller paced the Oiler ground game with 127 yards and two touchdowns. His 68 yard run set up his own two-yard touchdown run that gave the Oilers their 14-0 lead.
On their ensuing possession, the Griffins were looking to answer the big play drive as they drove the ball into Oiler territory. But on third and seven, Dylin Bruce intercepted a pass and returned it 76 yards for a touchdown that pushed the Oiler lead to 21-0.
The Griffins were able to compile 161 rushing yards, led by 89 yards from senior runningback Kamden Tillis. Junior quarterback Elijah McDaniel combined with Osborn for 163 passing yards, including a touchdown pass to Corbin Rogers. Rogers finished with 96 receiving yards on three receptions.
Los Alamitos (0-2) will host Serra High (1-1) on Friday at 7 p.m. at John Barnes Field at Los Alamitos High. Serra is coming off a 49-12 win over Hamilton High.
