Cypress runner-up champs in heartbreaking loss

Cypress coaches offer consolation and thanks to players for a season that saw them go 13-1 and come within a minute of winning a CIF Championship.

After a spotless and Cinderella season, the clock finally struck twelve as Temecula Valley eked out a win after going ahead on a trick play with just 41 seconds left.

Temecula edged out Cypress 28-21 to win the second CIF league championship in the school’s history, leaving a shocked and saddened Coach Rick Feldman with a 13-1 season record.

He told the OC Sports Zone that he was extremely proud of the Centurions effort, but in the end, there were just too many unforced errors against a really good team.

“Too many to overcome. I was hoping if it didn’t go our way, I was hoping it would because we played really well and it wasn’t good enough,” he told OCSZ writer Tim Burt. “Unfortunately, we didn’t play well and we barely lost so it makes it tougher to swallow,” he said.

“Number one, I thought we won with class all year long and we always try to teach them to lose with dignity,” Feldman said. “We tried to do that tonight. There was a little stomping on our logo (at the center of the field) to our fans, but our guys ignored that and just waited and shook their hands and did the right thing. It’s a special group of guys with tons of character.

The Temecula Valley coach said he did not see any “stomping” but would review the video tape.

As was the case for most of the season, the Centurions we led by Issac Hurtado, rushing for 108 years and two touchdowns, while QB Dylan Eldredge passed for more than 200 yards on the night.

“We lost tonight and I hate that, but the result doesn’t matter in the way I feel about these guys. I love them all,” said Feldman, according to OC Sports Zone article.
