As for the quarterback position, Cypress head coach Bob Burt opted to go the platoon system, alternating signal callers Jesse Dages and sophomore Nick Buras.

Buras threw the only touchdown of the game, but Dages contributed a 40-yard field to put the Centurions on the board.

El Modena was led by an impressive performance by running back Austin Victer, who gained 184 yard rushing yards and scored a touchdown. Wesley Huang also kicked a 32-yard field goal to push El Modena in front 11-3 at the start of the fourth quarter.

Down but not out, Cypress responded, scoring a touchdown with 8:57 left to play. Quarterback Nick Buras did the deed, connecting with wide receiver Pounds for a 29-yard score. The Centurions then went for a 2-point conversion to tie the contest, but Buras floated a pass over the head of his intended receiver.

Cypress will not play this week due to a bye, but it will return to action against Long Beach Cabrillo of the Moore League on Sept. 14 at Western High. That contest will start at 7 p.m.
