Centurions mauled by Tigers

The Cypress High football team battled Valencia for the No. 2 spot in the Empire League standings on Thursday, Oct. 31. The Centurions failed to contain the Tigers offensive attack, falling 41-3 during the Halloween contest at Western High in Anaheim.

The Centurions (6-3, 3-2) are now in a three-way tie for third place, though they have defeated both teams they share that spot with as of this week. Quarterback Nick Buras completed 8 of 16 passes for 116 yards. Junior running back Quinten Pounds topped the team with 40 yards on the ground.

The Centurions briefly led the contest at 3-0 in the first quarter. They managed to score a field goal on their opening drive, which kicker Aspen Smith booted for a 23-yard field goal. However, the Tigers (7-2, 4-1) responded, taking a 7-0 lead when Tom Torres pounded in a 1-yard run. Torres would end with 120 yards on the ground.

In the second quarter, the Tigers added 13 points to take a 20-3 lead at the half. Jake Watkins scored the first touchdown with a 61-yard dash. Quarterback Pat Godoy, who threw for 121 yards and scrambled for 92 yards, would score three touchdowns with his legs. He scored run from 5, 10 and 3 yards.

The Tigers expanded their lead to 33-3 in the third. In the fourth, they added a safety as well as Will Van Dam, who ran for 130 yards, penetrating the end zone for the final score of the night.

Yorba Linda owns the top spot in the Empire League standings.

Cypress can potentially snag an at-large berth in the CIF Southwest Division playoffs. They will finish their season against Western on Friday, Nov. 7 at Western High.
