Cypress High’s football team ran into a stingy defense on Friday night, as El Modena held the Centurions to just nine points in an 11-9 non-league loss for Cypress.

The Centurions had 82 yards rushing from Jake Brito, but couldn’t find the end zone until the fourth quarter. Cypress quarterback Nick Buras found Quinten Pounds for a 29-yard scoring strike early in the fourth that cut the El Modena lead to 11-9. However, the Centruions failed to convert a pass attempt for a two-point conversion and El Modena held on for the win.

The Cypress defense stifled the Vanguard passing game, but struggled to contain the El Modena ground attack. El Modena was led by senior Austin Victer, who rushed for 184 yards against the Centurions.

Cypress (1-1) had a total of 85 passing yards from quarterbacks Buras and Dages. Pounds led the receivers with 57 yards.

The Centurions will have a bye this week and return to action at home against Cabrillo of Long Beach on Sept. 14, at 7 p.m.
