Executive Director Anne Hertz and Director of Operations Sue Osbon of the Boys & Girls Club of Cypress were the guest speakers at the Woman’s Club of Cypress Jan. 7 meeting held at the Cypress Community Center.
Speaking at the club’s first meeting of the New Year, Hertz shared the Boys and Girls Club’s mission.
“It is to inspire and empower all young people, especially those in need, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.”
To accomplish their mission, they keep members focused on goals such as:
· Planning for the future.
· Demonstrating good character and citizenship
· Living a healthy lifestyle
· Developing a lifelong commitment to fitness
Osbon spoke about the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Program, one of the club’s successful after school programs. “STEM and the other after school programs support 230 children by providing a safe haven for them to play and study in a positive environment.”
Hertz explained how the club provides over $200,000 in program service fee scholarships to nearly 300 members.
“We want to give our members hope and opportunity. We are committed to
our special needs children, those from single parent households and the military community. Also, we are very proud that our club was recognized by the Boys and Girls Club of America and was granted an award for excellence at the Pentagon.”
Joyce Grohmann, president of the Woman’s Club of Cypress, expressed the sentiments of all the members. “We are proud to have the Boys and Girls Club of Cypress in our community. We support their efforts to improve and enrich the lives of young members in Cypress and surrounding cities.
Just in the last few months, the WCC has contributed $700 to the club to support their ongoing programs.”
