After a scoreless first quarter, Cypress (4-1) took a 14-0 lead with two touchdowns in the second quarter. Quarterback Nick Buras led the Centurions with 175 passing yards and 57 rushing yards. He connected with Brennan Corbin late in the second quarter for a touchdown pass that gave Cypress a 14-0 lead.
Early in the second quarter, Corbin caught a touchdown pass from Quentin Pounds that put the Centurions up 7-0. Kennedy (3-3) fought back in the second half, cutting the lead to 14-9 with a safety and a touchdown run by T.J. Williams at 3:45 in the third. Williams finished with 94 rushing yards and Dillon Peterson added 32, but the Fighting Irish could not put any more points on the board.
Cypress kicker Aspen Smith added a 28-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring. Cypress will play at Tustin at 7 p.m. on Friday, while Kennedy has a bye week and will return to action at 7 p.m. on Oct. 18 at Western High.
Los Alamitos rolls
Los Alamitos quarterback Nick Wendell threw for 254 yards and a touchdown to lead the Griffins to a 27-13 non-league win over Damien on Friday on the road.
Wendell connected with Dashawn Gordon for a 51-yard touchdown pass that got the Griffins on the board for a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter. Gordon had 114 receiving yards and Kendall Brownlow had 76 receiving yards.
Mike Hayden had a one yard rushing touchdown early in the fourth quarter and Jerry Raye added a 65-yard punt return for a touchdown later in the fourth to put the game away for the Griffins. Kicker Brett Mathis had field goals of 24 and 25 yards to add to the Griffins’ score.
Los Alamitos will open Sunset League play at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Newport Harbor High. The Griffins have lost their last two meetings with the Sailors, including a 31-28 loss last year at Veteran’s Stadium.
