State Girls

American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 716, in Los Alamitos yearly sponsors young ladies from local high schools to attend Girls State in Sacramento. Girls State gives them an opportunity to learn about government from the city through the federal level. During their stay in “mock cities” they have elections and hold government offices. Sara Mankey (left) from Los Alamitos High was the county auditor and recorder for the city of Balboa. Sara Salinas (middle) from Western High held the office of assemblywoman for the city of Freemont and Jessica Iribe from Cypress High (right) was elected by the city of Portola to serve as student aid commissioner. The ladies are pictured with American Legion Auxiliary President Cindy Mayfield (far right) after receiving their Girls State medal and a certificate of appreciation for their participation.
