Several members of the U.S. Women’s Water Polo team were celebrated by a packed house at the Los Alamitos City Council Chamber on Monday for their gold medal performance at the recent Olympic Games in London. Players Heather Petri and Annika Dries were on hand, along with most of the coaching staff, to receive certificates from the City Council.
Team USA trains at the pool at the Joint Forces Training Base. Much of the ability to maintain the pool for community use comes from the money that Team USA brings to the center. But the City of Los Alamitos first had to refurbish the pool as it had fallen into disrepair and was a habitat for small creatures.
Mayor Pro Tem Marilynn Poe was one of the city representatives who worked to find a way to make the pool a community center. Later, when Team USA came on as tenants, Poe said it made their efforts even more rewarding.
“We have been so pleased to provide this place for the kinds of things you have been able to accomplish,” Poe told the team members in attendance.
