Los Alamitos Mayor Troy Edgar will move on to the November ballot for the State Assembly post in the 72nd District after he was the top vote getter in the primary on Tuesday.
The Wednesday afternoon updates had Edgar with more than 28 percent of the votes, having garnered more than 4,000 more that second-place candidate Travis Allen from Huntington Beach. Allen, a republican, pushed past Garden Grove democrat Joe Dovinh by just a few hundred votes after Dovinh had led in the late stages of Tuesdays count.
Absentee ballots are still being counted, giving Dovinh a chance to overtake Allen. If Allen holds on, that means that two republicans, Edgar and Allen will battle it out on the November ballot for the office.
In the U.S. congressional race for the 47th District, Gary DeLong and Alan Lowenthal will move on to the general election ballot. Lowenthal, with strong support in Long Beach, garnered more than 33 percent of the votes in the district. DeLong was the top vote getter in Orange County with more than 31 percent and Lowenthal garnered nearly 24 percent of the OC votes in the eight-candidate race.
