Race on Base draws a crowd

More than 4,440 people made their way around the Joint Forces Training Base on Saturday as the 33rd Annual Southland Credit Union Race on the Base brought participants from around the area and beyond.

More than 4,440 people made their way around the Joint Forces Training Base on Saturday as the 33rd Annual Southland Credit Union Race on the Base brought participants from around the area and beyond.

The number of participants were spread out over the 5K, 10K, reverse triathlon, handcycle and inline skate races. In it’s 33rd year, the Race on the Base continues to be a big draw for area athletes and city officials were more than pleased with this year’s event.

“This was the largest Race on the Base in its 33-year history and we are proud to host the largest Reverse Triathlon in the country,” Director of Recreation and Community Services Corey Lakin, said.

Lakin noted that the race has only been able to grow because of the sponsors, staff members and volunteers. In addition to the 4,443 racers, the event had 30 sponsors, 75 vendors, 500 volunteers, six charities, and the combined staff of 150 from the City of Los Alamitos, Joint Forces Training Base and Run Racing, Lakin said.

“This event truly defines community, bringing together Los Alamitos residents, the Joint Forces Training Base, local businesses, the non-profit community, the Los Alamitos Unified School District, and visitors from all over Orange and Los Angeles counties and beyond,” Lakin said.

Some local highlights from the race included Cypress resident Donovan Querubin winning the male age 19-24 division 10K in a time of 43:02.3. Los Alamitos resident Hitoshi Murakami won the male age 40-44 division in a time of 44:27.9. Randy Parker of Los Alamitos won the male age 50-54 division with a time of 41:53.2. Parker was 13th overall among men.

In the women’s 10K, Cypress resident Rebecca Mcdevitt was 81st overall and first in the female age 11-12 division with a time of 55:49.8. Another Cypress resident Lauren Kim was 73rd overall and the top finisher among ages 15-18, with a time of 55:03.1.

In the female age 35-39 division, Cypress resident Angela Beckett was second and 66th overall, with a time of 47:44.9. Los Alamitos resident Karen Frankenberg was second in the female age 50-54 division with a time of 50:33.7. She was 20th overall among women.

Linda Townshend of Los Alamitos won the female age 60-64 division with a time of 55:30.8.

In the 5K, Los Alamitos resident Cody Hearn finished in first place in the age 10 and under division, with a time of 23:39.6. He was 67th overall. In the male age 13-14 division, Rossmoor resident Jacob Taylor was third with a time of 20:21.3.

In the male age 25-29 division, Cypress resident Emery Wright finished first overall, with a time of 20:30.9. He was the 24th overall finisher. Los Alamitos resident Phil Avalos was third in the male age 45-49 division, with a time of 20:19.1 and was 21st overall.

Los Alamitos City Councilman Troy Edgar was sixth in the male age 45-49 division, with a time of 23:43.1. He was 70th overall.

In the male age 60-64 division, Cypress resident Bruce Troutman finished second, with a time of 26:42.4. In the female age 11-12 division, Los Alamitos resident Amber Demarco was second with a time of 24:25.3. Madison Thompson of Los Alamitos was third in the female age 15-18 division with a time of 26:25.5. Cypress resident Cassie Cecil was third in the female age 19-24 division with a time of 25:20.2.

Los Alamitos resident Heather Blackmun was second in the female age 35-39 division, with a time of 22:54.4. She was 49th overall and the seventh place female. In the female age 40-44, Cypress resident Malimi Nagpal was third, with a time fo 24:31.4. She was the 20th female overall.

In the female 50-54 division, Los Alamitos resident Linda Krebs finished first and was the 13th overall female finisher in a time of 23:50.3. Los Alamitos resident Nancy Conway was second with a time of 31:37.9. In the female age 70-74 division Los Alamitos residents Georgia Merchant was third (45:08.8) and Barbara Smith was fourth (49:53.2). For complete results visit raceonthebase.com.
