The California Affiliate of FCCLA members from Walker Junior High School attended the Region 9 Competitive Recognition Events program. The event was held at John Muir High School in Pasadena. Students competed against others from across Southern California. The student competitors from Walker Junior High School were Sarah Hall, Kristen Kim, Nicole Nguyen, Alisha Patel, Gauri Patel, and Isabella Patel.
The FHA-HERO chapter of Walker Junior High School is new to the school this year. Any Walker student interested in the field of home economics can join the chapter that meets outside of class. Jennifer Sasai, home economics teacher at Walker Junior High School, advises the chapter. Students prepare for a variety of competitions related to the skills they learned in home economics classes at Walker Junior High School.
Walker Junior High School brought home the following awards: 1st place in Chapter Exhibit, 1st place Creed, Nicole Nguyen; 2nd place in Interior Design, Alisha Patel; 4th place in Prepared Speech, Gauri Patel; 5th place in Prepared Speech, Sarah Hall; and 5th place Salad Preparation, Kristen Kim. The students are now eligible to compete at the FHA-HERO State Leadership Conference in Fresno in April.
Sasai remarked, “I am so proud of the students. They worked very hard to prepare for their competitions. This competition allowed them to practice real world skills.”
FHA-HERO The California Affiliate of FCCLA is a statewide career-technical student organization for young people interested in or enrolled in Home Economics Careers and Technology Education Programs. The focus of the organization is to prepare students for roles as family members, citizens and workers in some of California’s fastest growing industries. More than 4.500 students participate in leadership development activities throughout the state. In California, FHA-HERO is sponsored by the Home Economics Careers and Technology Education Staff, California Department of Education.
