Thursday, Sept. 3

Non-League

Katella (7-4, 5-0 in 2014) vs. Western (1-0)

at Glover Stadium, 7 p.m.

Western opened the season with a 26-0 win over Alhambra on the road last week. Big plays keyed the Western victory as Ramzi Al Shurman had a 60-yard touchdown reception and Jacob Adams broke off a 65-yard touchdown run for the Pioneers. The defense also got involved as Enrique Lopez returned an interception 30 yards for a touchdown. The Pioneers should face a much tougher challenge this week with road game against the defending Orange League champions.

Los Alamitos (9-2, 5-0 in 2014) vs. Paramount (7-5, 3-2 in 2014)

at Veterans Stadium/Long Beach, 7 p.m.

This will be the season opener for Los Alamitos. Paramount (1-0) opened its season with a 34-7 win over Wilson High of Long Beach. Los Alamitos enters the season as the No. 8 ranked team in the CIF-SS West Valley Division pre-season rankings. Paramount is ranked No. 6 in the CIF-SS Southeast Division pre-season rankings. Los Alamitos won the Sunset League last year, while Paramount was the third place team out of the San Gabriel Valley League. These two teams have met the past three seasons, with Los Alamitos winning all three prior meetings.

Rancho Alamitos (11-3, 3-2 in 2014) vs. Savanna (4-6, 2-3 in 2014)

at Bolsa Grande High, 7 p.m.

This will be the season opener for both teams. Rancho reached the CIF-SS Southern Division title game last year, before falling to Garden Grove. The Vaqueros entered the season as the No. 7 ranked team in the CIF-SS preseason poll. Garden Grove was No. 1 and another Garden Grove League team, Los Amigos came in at No. 8. These two teams met last year, with Rancho defeating Savanna 48-27.

Friday, Sept. 4

Non-League

Northwood vs. Kennedy (0-1)

at Irvine High, 7 p.m.

Kennedy lost its season opener, 32-20 at Fullerton last week. Kennedy led the game 20-13 at the end of the third quarter, but Fullerton was able to score 19 fourth quarter points to garb the victory. Quarterback Adrian Quezada led the Fighting Irish with 95 rushing yards and also threw for 158 yards. One of his passes was a 50-yard touchdown completion to Derrick Deese and Quezada ran for another score.

Fullerton (1-0) vs. Cypress (0-1)

at Fullerton College, 7 p.m.

Cypress showed its inexperience in a 23-7 loss to Woodbridge last week. Woodbridge is a solid team, but a couple of penalties killed two prime scoring opportunities that could have changed the whole game. Cypress will have another tough challenge this week with a Fullerton team that was able to hold off Kennedy in their opener.

Edison (0-1) vs. Buena Park (1-0)

at Huntington Beach High, 7 p.m.

Buena Park rolled to a 75-20 win over Orange in their season opener last week. Buena Park was led by Zach Taylor, who ran for 137 yards and two touchdowns and passed for 278 yards and five more touchdowns in the win. Elijah Bynum had two kickoff returns for touchdowns as the Coyote special teams provided a big spark.

The Coyotes were the No. 7 ranked team in the CIF-SS Southwest Division pre-season rankings. This week’s game should be a much tougher test for Buena Park.

Edison came into the season ranked No. 9 in the CIF-SS West Valley Division pre-season rankings. They lost their opener, 35-16, to Tesoro, which was ranked No. 5 in the same division poll. Edison usually schedules one of the tougher pre-league schedules in the county.

Garden Grove (13-1, 5-0 in 2014) at Westminster (9-3, 5-0 in 2014)

at Westminster High, 7 p.m.

Defending Garden Grove League and CIF-SS Southern Division Champion Garden Grove opens the season with a renewal of their series against Westminster High. This marks the eighth consecutive year the two teams have met, with Garden Grove winning the previous seven years.

Garden Grove entered the year as the No. 1 ranked team in the CIF-SS Southern Division pre-season polls. Westminster, which won the Golden West League title last year, was voted the No. 5 team in the same division pre-season poll.

Artesia (0-1) vs. Magnolia (1-0)

at Western High, 7 p.m.

Kalolo Pangia rushed for 176 yards and three touchdowns to lead Magnolia to a 46-8 win over Glenn High last week. Montez De Marco added 63 rushing yards and two more rushing touchdowns for Magnolia. Magnolia finished 3-2 and tied for second place in the Orange League last year.

Marina (0-1) at Ocean View (7-4, 4-1 in 2014)

at Ocean View High, 7 p.m.

Marina opened the season with a 40-21 loss to Aliso Niguel last week. The Vikings were able to compile 285 yards of passing with one touchdown. Quarterback Anthony De La Torre had 240 yards passing. Blaine Riederich had 67 rushing yards and two touchdowns for Marina. However, the defense could not contain Aliso Niguel’s passing offense. Nick Chapman threw for 375 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Wolverines. Ocean View could provide a similar problem with returning quarterback Blake Meyer leading a stong passing game for the Seahawks.
