The 2015 spring semester at Cypress College has students enjoying the view of the sun and campus life.

The 2015 spring semester at Cypress College is fully underway! With homework here, the new year does not seem so new. Eager students were welcomed back with food, drink, and music to make them feel at home. It is apparent by fashion that the weather has shifted.  Scarves and sweaters have been replaced with shorts, tank tops, and early spring dresses.

Optimism is in the air, and students are confident that their hard work will bear fruit. The hustle and bustle on campus is remarkable. Student clubs are actively seeking new membership. And academic counselors are providing students with many workshops to take advantage of.

“There is definitely more activity,” said Raymond Gomez. “There are more workshops and resources for students planning to transfer.”

Typically, during the spring, would-be transfer students are working to satisfy their remaining lower division coursework requirements for their intended major, in order to transfer to their chosen university in the fall. This probably explains the extra focus worn on many students’ faces.

According to Cypress College Director of Campus Communications Marc Posner student enrollment is expected to be up 4 percent from Spring 2014, though this number is yet unofficial.

What is official is athletic competition. Baseball and softball players are ringing the air with pings of aluminum; swimmers and divers are splashing; basketball and tennis players are running their respective courts; and golfers are unseen, most likely practicing on a nearby driving range. One may visit the campus website, cypresscollege.edu, for sport schedules.

In and throughout the college campus, there is art to be observed. There are sculptures encased and unique formations strategically placed for aesthetic purposes. In addition, there are student paintings in every building. Even with this constant reminder of the beauty of art, many faculty are concerned with the drop in enrollment in fine arts classes.

“The Fine Arts Department is trying to get the word out to motivate and inspire students to join fine arts classes,” said Ann Ching, an art major.

A part of this attempt to inspire is the presence of a professional art gallery on campus. The gallery is located in a showroom that is attached to the campus theatre. This gallery is open to the public on weekdays between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

There is much going on at Cypress College this semester. The community is welcome to join and experience the arts and athletics.
