Cypress High got off on the right track. The squad endured blazing temperatures to delivered a 28-14 victory against Lakeside, which hosted the non-league contest in Lake Elsinore.

For the Centurions (1-0, quarterback Nick Buras relied more on his legs than arm. He became the team’s top rusher by scrambling for 79 yards, though he also completed 8-of-17 passes for 109 yards.

Senior Quinten Pounds led the Centurions with 43 receiving yards and 35 more on the ground. He also scored a touchdown. Joe Chavez finished with 57 rushing yards and 32 yards from the air, scoring a pair of touchdowns.

The Centurions suffered a loss. Tyler Hansen, a sophomore, fractured his leg. He received treatment before the paramedics transferred him to a local high school.

Cypress will face Modena on Thursday, Sept. 5 at Western High’s Handel Stadium in Anaheim. The contest starts at 7 p.m.

Kennedy also opened its season last Friday, but suffered a 13-6 defeat to Esperanza.

Despite the outcome, the Irish (0-1) battled the entire game and even led briefly. Kennedy’s Randle Williams, who finished with 19 rushing yards, scored a 12-yard touchdown. However, a botched point-after kick allowed the Aztecs to tie the score at 6-6 before the end of the first half. Kicker Robbie Dirks booted a 27 and 37 yard field goal to do the deed.

The Aztecs scored the winning touchdown off a fumble return in the third quarter.

For the Irish, quarterback Justin Minor went 3-for-14 for 41 yards. He also gained 28 yards on the ground. Williams had a catch for 19 yards and Joe Hansberry snagged a pair of receptions for 25 yards.

Kennedy will face Northwood (Irvine) on the road Friday, Sept. 6 at 7 p.m.
